Review: Sony's E3 2012 PlayStation 3 Conference

Games industry press conferences aren’t about facts and announcements. They are about emotions and feelings.

Excitement is the absolute minimum emotional level of engagement that E3‘s millions of marketing dollars are required to achieve, thus the flashing lights and blaring drums and whooping celebs.

But the organizers must strive for a higher plane, a place where we the viewers thrum with booming heart-beat and moistening eye.

Big emotion, edge-of-your-seat stuff came from two games, one at the beginning of the presentation and one at the end.

Unfortunately, in between we suffered eons of boredom as Sony trotted through its corporate agenda of keeping Move on the map, and half-heartedly saving Vita's miserable hide.

First, the good stuff.

Beyond: Two Souls a PS3-exclusive from Quantic Dream, offered up taut drama and that rare thing, a central video game character, Jodie Holmes, who knows how to shut the hell up and still be interesting. There was more emotional electricity offered here, in an exchange between cop and quiet girl,  than a horde of hysterical blood-lust buffoons on the rampage, chattering their inanities.

David Cage's work isn't to everyone's taste and accusations that his games lack action will always stick. But for anyone tired of bows and arrows and sliced throats, here was an alternative, a story rooted in human experience. There aren’t many developers who will begin their schtick with, “Death is the biggest mystery of mankind.” And by ‘death’ Cage was referring to the extinction of self, as opposed to a hammer-blow to an NPC’s cranium.

Even so, few games are willing to entirely forgo action. Holmes’ major line came at the end of her appearance, “Tell them to leave me the f*** alone because next time I’ll kill everyone.”

Shown at the very end of Sony’s 1.5 hour presentation, The Last of Us is a fascinating world, our own but broken, post-apocalypse done with colors and authenticity. It's also, it turns out, a game that involves extreme violence. In this demo, main character Joel sneaks around before basically killing everyone who gets in his way. This isn't to disparage what, for many, is top of their most-wanted list. It's a gorgeous game with an interesting relationship at its core, between Joel and a girl called Ellie.

E3 2012: Failing to Cooperate in Far Cry 3

Imagine a lush, dense, layered jungle, one full of possibilities, options and secrets. Imagine a cast of characters that spring to life under pressure, the friction of their personalities sparking wild, ferocious chemistry that requires scripted moments in an open world. Imagine gameplay that requires choice and strategic thinking to overcome odds that are often overwhelming, where you wish you had help to achieve your task.

Now keep dreaming, because Far Cry 3’s cooperative mode is none of those things. While an argument could be made that the game’s single player ambitions check off a number of those ideas, its counterpart is wholly lacking not only in engaging design but anything remotely compelling. It detracts from the overall product and, as it currently exists, could be considered a strong reason not to buy the game.

Ubisoft’s alternative to the Jason/Vaas dynamic in the single player mode places four distinct (albeit stereotypical) characters in a jungle, presumably with the intent of twisting them around just as the main game’s storyline seems poised to do. That in and of itself is no problem, as it’s one of the key notions - and mysteries - that intrigues us about Far Cry 3 as a whole. But everything surrounding it fails to do anything, not only as a cooperative endeavor, but as a shooter in general.

Ostensibly four players would team up to face challenges too great for any one person (or two or three) to overcome. Curiously that doesn’t seem to be the case with FC3. After choosing a basic layout of weaponry, four players are given mundane tasks like carrying bombs to destroy a bridge or fixing a train to progress to their next team-oriented goal. Naturally there are those who don’t want these things done, who attack one after the next to attempt to thwart you and your friends.

But take that “one after the next” statement almost to its literal meaning. The threat your opposition poses here is almost nonexistent, to the point where one player shouldn’t have much of a problem doing everything necessary. Furthermore it’s tough to imagine that even a steep increase in difficulty would even things out. Even if it did, the modes objectives are so mundane it wouldn’t matter. There is no coordination required here. There is no variety. All players are tasked with doing the same things at the same time - fix this, bomb that, kill those guys over there - and the lack of necessary diversification or specialization is truly alarming.

Far Cry 3 has a lot left to prove as an overall product. Its single player element has yet to fully reveal itself as an open world shooter, but it’s easy to see how those ideas can weave their way into the more scripted segments we’ve seen so far. The cooperative multiplayer is something else entirely. Though admittedly only a taste of the complete product, the demo we played was so underwhelming and completely lacking in quality that it’s hard to see how anything redeeming could result with a mere three months of development left.

Ridley Scott Going Biblical

It seems like Ridley Scott's wish list of projects just keeps going and going, but earlier this week the director revealed yet another film he has lined up in his queue, and this time it's .

"I've got something else in the works. I'm already doing it. It's called Moses," Scott told Esquire in a recent interview. "I probably shouldn't have let that slip out. I'm not supposed to say anything... It's definitely in the cards, though. What's interesting to me about Moses isn't the big stuff that everybody knows. It's things like his relationship with Ramses [II, the pharaoh]. I honestly wasn't paying attention in school when I was told the story of Moses. Some of the details of his life are extraordinary."

The story of Moses has been a hot ticket item at the studios lately. Both Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox have laid claim to their own projects centered on the ancient prophet. Last we heard, Spielberg was attached to direct Gods and Kings for Warners, so we can only assume for now that Scott was referring to the Moses pic over at Fox.

In the meantime, the filmmaker has plenty more to work on, including his next film The Counselor.

E3 2012: The Last of Us Gameplay Footage Debuted

During its E3 press conference today, Sony showed new footage from The Last of Us.

In the demo shown, Joel and Ellie are in Rivers Cafe and exit to find a flooded city street.

They soon wander (passing a movie poster for Dawn of the Wolf) and end up in what was once a fancy hotel.

Joel soon encounters men in a hotel room and fights with them. Ellie throws a brick at one and Joel is soon in a shootout. He battles against two guys, bashing one into the floor.

Using materials, Joel creates a molotov cocktail and throes it at enemies, burning one alive. Joel soon gets in a hand-to-hand struggle and Ellie attacks the man he's fighting with from behind. He elbows her and Joel pounces. Joel pulls a gun and the man begs not to be shot; Joel shoots him anyway.

E3 2012: Exclusive Far Cry 3 DLC Coming to PS3

At Sony's E3 2012 Playstation press conference, Ubisoft announced in passing that the Playstation 3 version of Far Cry 3 will receive "exclusive DLC." No additional details have yet been announced. With its emphasis on cooperative and competitive multiplayer, it seems likely that multiplayer map and/or skin DLC is likely planned, although we will just have to wait and see what DLC plans Ubisoft has for its upcoming "insane" FPS.

E3 2012: Making Games in LittleBigPlanet Karting

As the IGNer who reviewed ModNation Racers – and became a Level 30 racer online in the process -- I was depressed to stay home and send He Only Does Everything Colin Moriarty and the Dark Knight of News Andrew Goldfarb to PlayStation's reveal of LittleBigPlanet Karting. But I read Goldfarb's preview, watched the duo's video, and got to play the E3 build.

But when I was finished with my racing, I just needed to talk to another LittleBigPlanet Karting expert about the impressive things this game is doing. So, without his knowledge, I grabbed Goldfarb and made him whip up half of my preview before we left San Francisco for E3.

Greg Miller: Goldie, you were the kart-racing expert I sent in my stead to see LittleBigPlanet Karting. You remember what I said to you when I read your preview for the first time?

Andrew Goldfarb:  Hmm. No. What did you say?

Greg: Amateur. I came over and asked you if it was still a racing game. After reading the preview, I thought it might be some bastardized platformer.

Goldfarb: Ha. I mean it's still very much a racing game; I was just saying it felt like it belonged in the LittleBigPlanet universe.

Greg: Exactly -- and now that I've played it, I get that. Reading your report, I didn't. I was a bit confused, but playing it and seeing how the grapplehook works on a racetrack -- it all makes sense.

It feels familiar and easy. I like it way better than the ModNation interface.

Goldfarb: Are you writing a new preview of it?

Greg: Yes. This is the preview. You're in it. Right now.

Goldfarb:  You just blew my mind.

Greg: Word -- the same way LittleBigPlanet Karting blew mine when I got to try one of the new levels.

Goldfarb:  Was it the same one I played?

Greg: See, I don't know how much you saw of it, but you can still create games in Karting. Just like LBP2. Did they show you this madness?

Goldfarb:  They didn't! How does it work?

Greg: Just like LBP2, which is so bizarre. You can sit there and create any kind of game -- involving a kart -- you want. I played one that was an MotorStorm RC clone with the camera pulled way back and anchored on a top down-ish view with the karts looking like slot cars. Another had this dinosaur spitting fire, and I had to steal her eggs and toss them in a bin for points and time to keep the game going.

It's more than just a racer. Does that make sense?

Goldfarb:  It does, and that's what I liked about it, too. They were telling us about how you can use the exact same level editor as the designers. That's crazy. Did they show you any of the character customization?

Greg: Not really. What did you see?

Goldfarb: You're in the pod, same as LBP2. Switching outfits, Sackboy color, etc. is all done through the Pop-It, and it's completely natural. It feels familiar and easy. I like it way better than the ModNation interface.

Greg: Totally. That is what was weird to play as a fan of ModNation Racers and LBP. I was expecting a re-skinned MNR, but this really is an expansion of the LBP universe. I was expecting to create tracks, but you can create worlds.

Goldfarb: Yup. I think that's why I came away feeling really good about it. It definitely appeals to the kart racer fan in me and battle mode was insanely fun, but the customization stuff is what will keep me coming back to see what people have created.

Greg: Well, good. It's impressive. Your massive preview and excitement was justified. Now, let's just hope it comes out one day and doesn't stall forever like LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.

Goldfarb: If I wanted to find out the release date once it's announced, where can i go to find the latest news on all things LittleBigPlanet?

Greg: IGN.com, of course! Now, get back to packing for E3.

Goldfarb: Will do.

Did THQ Lay Off Employees Today?

Rumors are circulating on Twitter that THQ laid off employees at its San Diego studio today. This comes on the heels of the news that THQ no longer holds the the official Ultimate Fighting Championship license, as EA officially announced a multi-year, multi-title deal with the sports franchise. THQ was asked for comment about the layoffs, but only responded with a press release about the "transition of the ultimate fighting championship videogame rights," so it's unclear if the rumors are true or have anything to do with today's licensing news.

Tomorrow, 6/5 THQ will hold an investor meeting call prior to the Nintendo Press Conference, so hopefully this will be cleared up then. Stay tuned for more details as they're made available.

E3 2012: Microsoft Press Conference -- 5 Biggest Winners & Losers

With another Microsoft E3 press briefing in the books, who are the biggest winners and losers? We were live in the audience at the Galen Center and we're ready to pick the top -- and bottom -- five. First, let's meet the conference's biggest winners. Click over to page 2 for the losers.

5. Xbox SmartGlass

Let's be honest: the concept of a Wii U-like tablet application meant to interact with your games and entertainment apps could flame out in spectacular fashion in an Xbox Live Vision type of way. We're going to take the SmartGlass-half-full approach here, however (sorry). Though we could not possibly care less about having our tablet tell us where we are in Westeros while we're watching Game of Thrones, the gaming possibilities here could bear tasty fruit. Drawing up a play (or even just sorting through your playbook quickly) in Madden NFL 13? Love it. Having a Halo Bible-esque information database that interacts with what we're seeing on Halo 4's mysterious new planet of Requiem? We're in. Naturally, Microsoft only mentioned a Windows 8 version of this, but they're going to have to swallow their pride and put out an iOS version of SmartGlass if they want to have any hope whatsoever of this catching on.

4. South Park: The Stick of Truth

To paraphrase from one of the greatest comedies of our generation, that was frickin' sweet. Trey Parker and Matt Stone themselves came out on stage to introduce the game, eschewing the teleprompter and mocking the SmartGlass demo that preceded it to boot. Better, their game looks amazing...not literally, of course, as the duo were quick to mock the "sh*tty" look of their own show. But to that end, the game does, in fact, look exactly like the show, and is fantastically structured in such a way that they're able to incorporate nearly everything and everyone in the South Park universe, from Mr. Slave to Jesus to a fully rendered and navigable town. And even in the trailer, Parker and Stone's humor brightly shone through in the game. Screw you guys, we're going home...to watch this trailer over and over again.

3. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist

What do you get when you take some of the best elements from every Splinter Cell game so far? You get knifed in the face by Blacklist. Yes, the Tri-Goggled One is back, and he's got a knife to cut through cloth, Sticky Shockers to zap enemies dumb enough to stand in pools of water, the Mark and Execute gameplay introduced in Splinter Cell: Conviction, and -- oh yeah -- Spies vs. Mercenaries multiplayer mode. You'll also get a healthy dose of painful interrogations that always end up with enemies having their bones snapped like twigs and/or their eyeballs gouged out by Sam's knife. One potentially giant problem: longtime Sam Fisher voice actor Michael Ironside was noticeably absent. If he doesn't end up lending his signature pipes to Sam in the final game, we're going to (seriously consider but not actually) cancel our pre-order.

2. Halo 4

A lot is riding on Halo 4 for Microsoft. It's a new development team at 343 Industries and the start of a new trilogy aimed at carrying the franchise into the next generation of consoles. It's also the long-awaited return of Master Chief after the previous pair of Halo titles were clearly lacking in the badass hero department. The good news is that 343 came out smelling like a rose after debuting the first campaign footage of their debut project. A dark, mysterious new Forerunner enemy was revealed as Master Chief trudged through the jungles of Requiem in pursuit of a fallen UNSC ship. The sharp new graphics engine (particularly the lighting) clearly separated Halo 4 from its predecessors, while the from-scratch sound effects rocked the entire arena. More importantly, the new Forerunner weapon we got to see -- it literally pieced itself together in Chief's hands -- proved to be a badass railgun-y boomstick.

1. Tomb Raider

Sorry, Master Chief, but the lovely Lara stole the Microsoft Press Briefing...and our hearts. We first saw a promising "vertical slice" of the Tomb Raider reboot a full year ago, and it appears developer Crystal Dynamics has spent the 365 days since wringing every last bit of potential out of Croft's re-imagining. Visually, the game looks almost next-gen -- you probably wouldn't believe us if we told you that this game is built off of the same engine used to power Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Gorgeous vistas, incredibly detailed character models, and stunning art direction highlight the graphics, while gameplay is simply off the charts. Everything was on display, from bow-and-arrow combat to platforming to free-roaming elements. And to think that this game has another 7-8 months of development time and polish left. Tomb Raider was unquestionably the highlight of the Microsoft Press Conference.

E3 2012: PDP Unveils AfterGlow Headsets

Performance Designed Products has recently unveiled their Afterglow Headsets to go hand in hand with updated Aferglow controllers and communicators. If they sound as good as they look, color us excited (and luminescent shades of neon).

The Afterglow headsets come packing 50mm Neodymium Speakers, a dual suspension headband design for less wearer fatigue, and three audio modes: Pure Audio, Bass Boost, and 3D Cinema Surround Sound. Better still, the wired headsets come with an enticing $59.95 pricetag.

At $89.95, the wireless headsets will cost an extra 30 bones and boast similar specs, but come with the added convenience of less cords. The wireless headsets will come pre-paired to a transmitter with up to 40ft wireless range, and an Energizer Lithium Polymerer battery with an advertised 10 hours of gaming per charge. A charging cable's included.

Both will be available in September at retailers across North America.

PDP is also completely updating their massively popular Afterglow Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii controllers.

We'll be seeing the headsets and controllers later this week at E3 2012, and will, of course, let you know if they live up to our expectations.

E3 2012: On the Hunt in Assassin’s Creed III

It’s not hard to recognize an Assassin’s Creed game. The series has been around since 2007, and though it’s been quite successful, it hasn’t changed much. Sure, we’ve seen iterative advances like the improved controls of Assassin’s Creed II and the bomb-making mechanic of Revelations, but gameplay has generally been the same: run, climb, hide, kill, repeat.

With Assassin’s Creed III, that changes. Everything feels new and exciting again. While all of the elements fans of the series love are still included, Assassin’s Creed III adds in enough new features -- and improves upon old ones -- to feel fresh. More importantly, it evolves the idea of exploration. Instead of highlighting climbable ledges or using specific markers to tell you where to go, Assassin’s Creed III makes the environment around you feel real. If an area looks like you can access it, you probably can.

“Clarity of navigation is a big challenge in an organic environment because it’s in direct conflict with believability,” creative director Alex Hutchinson told IGN. “What we had to say was basically ‘you can go anywhere.’ Anything you see that has a handhold that’s climbable climbable and we really highlight the areas that you can’t go. We also worked on the idea of, even within branches, there are some areas where you can only go straight, and then we’ll make a very clear point of choice where you can divide to go back and in different directions.”

Assassin’s Creed III also introduces a brand new element: hunting. While we already knew hunting was included, seeing it in action immediately makes you realize what a smart fit it is for the franchise. Staying stealth now includes Stalking Zones, areas you can move through while you chase your prey. After a few seconds of watching Connor hide while he follows a deer, you’ll soon realize the franchise’s assassins have been hunting all along.

“Stalking zones are kind of like mobile hide spots. You can duck into them and if no one saw you, you can move around and hunt down your prey,” Hutchinson said. “They’re useful in the frontier if you’re hunting animals, but also in cities if you’re trying to hunt two-legged prey.”

Enemy encounters in general are far more exciting than they’ve been before. The team behind Assassin’s Creed III has rebuilt combat from the ground up, introducing a two-handed fight style that lets Connor use multiple weapons at once. In addition to a weapon like a tomahawk or hidden blade, Connor might be carrying a pistol. As you move through a crowd of enemies, you might use one weapon for close combat, then switch immediately to the pistol or bow and arrow for a ranged shot. No matter which combination you choose, combat is always quick, fluid and awesome looking.

“It’s all within your control,” Hutchinson said. “If [an enemy] is targeted and you tap Y he’ll shoot, but the animations that play are designated by the system. So if you’re facing the wrong way but your camera is pointing back towards someone then he’ll shoot over his shoulder. If you’re facing towards him, he’ll shoot straight ahead. So you’re in complete control but we always make you look cool.”

Streamlined combat also means streamlined visuals. The HUD has been dramatically simplified, and while button prompts may still appear during quick time events or while countering enemy attacks, the goal is to clear out the screen to allow players to focus and be immersed.

“We spent a lot of time working on immersion,” Hutchinson said. “What we wanted to do was clear out the screen a little bit, so we took most of the feedback from the top of the screen and put it on the bottom, just to give you a really nice view forward. And we’ve tried to make all of the highlights natural. You didn’t notice the highlights for targets, but they’re there when you’re playing. You see them pop between the guys, but we wanted them to be not as dominant on the screen as before.”

If Ubisoft is successful, you’ll be immersed in the world as you explore. Many non-playable characters you encounter feel like they’re actually something rather than just walking along a pre-scripted path, and you can interact with most of them. In the demo we saw, walking through a Colonial camp meant encountering trappers, soldiers and any number of other people who seemed to actually have a purpose.

“There’s a lot of crowd life that’s there to just tell the story of the space, people moving through the environment,” Hutchinson said. “But also in most of these locations, you can pick up side quests or you can encounter random animals that could be attacking you depending on season or time of day, so there’s all kinds of systemic stuff going on as well.”

Ubisoft has put a lot of time into refining the Assassin’s Creed experience, and it shows. While Connor still runs, climbs, hides and kills, he does it in a way Altair and Ezio never quite did, blending in with the world around him on a level previous games never achieved. The plot of Assassin’s Creed III is still shrouded in secrecy, but if the story is a match for the improvements to gameplay, this could easily be the best Assassin’s Creed yet.

Luc Besson's Lockout Breaks Into BD, DVD

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring Lockout, from Taken producer Luc Besson, to Blu-ray, DVD and UltraViolet July 17, 2012. The film was infamously sliced in the US, right before release, to obtain a PG-13. The Blu-ray and DVD will include the unrated cut, restoring the film's graphic violence and missing scenes.

While not a box office smash, Lockout did end up earning it's relatively small $20 million budget back, largely thanks to international sales. The film earned nearly $25 million worldwide.

Here's a synopsis of Lockout direct from Sony, "Luc Besson (Director of The Fifth Element) presents this futuristic thriller about a renegade CIA agent (Guy Pearce, Prometheus) who is betrayed by his government and sentenced to 30 years frozen in a cryonic chamber 50 miles above Earth. The only way to avoid serving time is a suicide mission – overcome a gang of ruthless prisoners and rescue the President’s daughter (Maggie Grace, Taken)."

The Blu-ray/UV combo pack will feature a 1080p high definition transfer (2.40:1 aspect ratio), mixed in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with optional Spanish, Portuguese and Italian 5.1 audio tracks. Subtitles include English (UK), English (US), Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin Am).

The DVD/UV combo pack features an anamorphic widescreen presentation with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio and optional Spanish and Portuguese language options. Subs for the DVD include English (US), Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin Am).

Both discs will include two behind-the-scenes featurettes: "Breaking into Lockout" and "A Vision of the Future: Production Design and Special Effects."

Stay tuned for more news regarding this release. Also, be sure to check out our theatrical review of the film.

Casino Royale's Mads Mikkelsen Is Hannibal Lecter

It's been a good year for Mads Mikkelsen. After winning the Best Actor prize at Cannes for The Hunt and being cast as the new villain in Thor 2, it looks like Mikkelsen has now landed the title role in NBC's upcoming drama series Hannibal.

Deadline reports that the Danish-born actor will be starring opposite Hugh Dancy (who is playing FBI agent Will Graham) in the 13-episode series written and executive produced by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Star Trek: Voyager). The new show will offer a contemporary take on the classic characters from Thomas Harris' novel Red Dragon. The fictional duo will be re-introduced at the genesis of their budding relationship. Graham, who is on the search for a dangerous serial killer, enlists the help of Dr. Lecter, a brilliant psychiatric mind, with no clue of the doctor's darker side.

The part of Hannibal Lecter was originally made famous by Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, but the part of Graham was also previously portrayed by Edward Norton in the 2002 Red Dragon from Universal Pictures.

Young Justice: "Bloodlines" Review

Full superhero sidekick spoilers follow.

It's good news/bad news with the latest Young Justice episode, "Bloodlines." The good news: Impulse has joined the show. The bad news: Impulse has joined the show.

It's an ongoing issue with Young Justice and one that clearly isn't going away. The show's creators insist on continuously adding new characters to the roster, which inevitably means that main players get short shrift (cough, Wally, Artemis, cough) that the newly inducted players are never fleshed out (hack, Rocket, Zatanna, hack).

Having said that, it is undeniably fun to see a character like Impulse in animated form. And the writers and producers more often than not handle these new faces with humor, faithfulness to their comics inspiration (even when reinterpreting them to fit into the YJ timeline, as with Impulse/Bart), and a general kick-ass-ness.

Anyway, "Bloodlines" is a fun Flash Family adventure, and how can it not be when it features not just Impulse -- arriving from the future allegedly to visit his eventual-granddad Barry Allen -- but also Barry himself, Wally's return to the Kid-Flash costume Jay Garrick -- who must be pushing 90 here -- donning the old metal skullcap again, all in a bid to save good old Central City!

Aside from the banter and geek thrills that come from a Flash grouping like this, there are several other nicely handled bits. Among them: Barry's slow-motion (from our perspective) quasi-POV, complete with heartbeat thumping, as he chugs along at "near lightspeed" to stop Neutron; Wally's inability to keep up with Barry and Impulse, including his admission that he can only make out "every fifth word" of their super-fast conversation; and Flash's costume ring, complete with a kinda-musical-callout to the live-action 1990s TV show.

Of course, this is all in service of an ever-deepening puzzle surrounding the Season 2 "Invasion," which it now seems clear is going to take some time to actually get to the real invadin'. Metagene experimentation is taking place, we learn here, supporting several of you alert readers out there who speculated last week that Tye Longshadow and the rest of those kidnapped kids were actually going to be modified to become super-beings. But still, it's all with the mystery and shadowy figures when it comes to who is masterminding this plot. We viewers continue to know more than our heroes, but still not much at all. Ho-hum.

Elsewhere, Red Arrow has cleaned up his act -- being a husband and father will do that to you -- and, together with his nuclear family, actually tracks down the original Roy. Though this is the B storyline of this episode, it definitely has some well-played moments, as when Cheshire tells her husband, "I need you be real. Our daughter needs you to be real." Damn straight! I also love how Cheshire brings their baby with them on a covert op -- and still manages to outfight the bad guys with the kid in a Bjorn the whole time. Mainly, though, it's great that the real Roy has finally been found so that this storyline can move forward now. But wait… that means another new character on the team, doesn't it?

The episode finale is pretty creepy too, as we realize that Impulse actually knew he was on a one-way trip to the past, all in an attempt to save the devastated future world he's from. Perhaps his glib attitude is more of a front than it at first seems. And seeing Neutron in that future, actually working with Impulse to alter the past, is also a nice touch -- though I'm not sure I get why he would remember that Impulse had to alter the past once the past was altered so that, from his perspective, said past never happened in the way that would've Impulse to alter it in the first place. Time travel!

Some notes: Can anyone explain to me what "crash the mode" means? "Such a Dick Grayson thing to do." Very cool how Neutron kind of pulls a Doctor Manhattan when he reconstitutes his body (and who said Watchmen wouldn't show up in this show?). "Your name's Tim? And yours is… Dick?!" Comic-Con is full of people from the future. It all makes sense now!

The Before Watchmen TV Commercial

This week sees the release of DC Comics' Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1, the first installment of DC's controversial Watchmen prequels. While I gave my first impressions of the #1s a few weeks ago (Minutemen was my favorite), this Wednesday I'll have the full review. However, to promote the release of the hyped project, DC debuted a new television commercial over at Entertainment Weekly that is scheduled to air this week.

Advertising comics on TV is hardly ever done these days, so it's nice to see DC taking the steps to reach a new audience instead of the same websites over and over again. More of this, please.

We also featured it on this week's Comics Run:

Whatever your opinion on Before Watchmen, expect to be hearing a lot of chatter about it come Wednesday's release.
