Nintendo Talks About Censoring Miiverse

Concerned about 'smear-campaigns' against products, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has spoken to CVG about the balance between free speech and moderation for the Wii U’s Miiverse service.

Miiverse will be Nintendo’s virtual community for its next console, and will allow users to post their opinion of games. Nintendo is concerned that this could lead to “negative campaigns on the internet in which false opinions are deliberately posted to ruin the reputation of a product.”

But Iwata has acknowledged the inherent danger of censoring negative comments, saying:

“It is very difficult to tell consumers' real complaints from those that are posted as part of a negative campaign. If we were to delete anything negative about our games, it could constitute a suppression of free speech and you would not able to believe in even a good reputation.”

Furthermore, Iwata is confident in the community of Miiverse to limit the scope of these malicious campaigns, stating that a “…number of users with fair opinions exist, opinions posted just for the purpose of a negative campaign will be gradually overwhelmed by the majority of posts of fair impressions.” This will in part be done by allowing users to flag inappropriate comments.

In his closing remarks Iwata also raises the point that they cannot totally rely on the community to make the right choices:

“We cannot afford to always act on 'the ethical doctrine that human nature is fundamentally good.' At the same time, however, we would like to believe in the possibility of 'the wisdom of crowds,' which could create a very interesting and fascinating world, and make efforts for the services to realize it in one way or another.”

Nintendo already has plans to use several techniques to moderate and control content posted by users in Miiverse. Besides allowing users to flag content, Nintendo will also employ a moderation team to approve images and normal posts, which could result in a delay of upwards to 30 minutes before content appears online.

Thanks, CVG.

Microsoft's ExpertZone Reveals Halo 4 Details

An educational slideshow hosted on Microsoft's ExpertZone - a site designed to bring retailers up-to-speed with its products - has revealed new information about Halo 4.

So what do we know now that we didn't already know? The quiz reveals that Halo 4 will have 10 new weapons. A couple of these - The Light rifle and Scattershot - were already revealed during Microsoft's E3 press conference. Interestingly, one of the slides reveals that  for "the first time, the Master Chief will have a true nemesis" and that players will fight against "a new race, unlike anything seen before in Halo".

There will also be "2 new vehicles plus many of your favorites from the past".

That's still a bit sketchy, admittedly. But there are some concrete details relating to Spartan Ops, which is Halo 4's TV series-style DLC experience. 50 missions will be released per 'season', with five missions dropping every week for 10 weeks. Each mission is said to be "introduced with a high-quality cinematic video so that you are well-briefed before you embark on your mission." And with series 1 of Spartan Ops is 100% free, it's being described as "like getting two campaigns with one game".

LittleEnglishHaloBlog has screens of the slides from the presentation.

E3 2012: PDP Unveils AfterGlow Headsets

Performance Designed Products has recently unveiled their Afterglow Headsets to go hand in hand with updated Aferglow controllers and communicators. If they sound as good as they look, color us excited (and luminescent shades of neon).

The Afterglow headsets come packing 50mm Neodymium Speakers, a dual suspension headband design for less wearer fatigue, and three audio modes: Pure Audio, Bass Boost, and 3D Cinema Surround Sound. Better still, the wired headsets come with an enticing $59.95 pricetag.

At $89.95, the wireless headsets will cost an extra 30 bones and boast similar specs, but come with the added convenience of less cords. The wireless headsets will come pre-paired to a transmitter with up to 40ft wireless range, and an Energizer Lithium Polymerer battery with an advertised 10 hours of gaming per charge. A charging cable's included.

Both will be available in September at retailers across North America.

PDP is also completely updating their massively popular Afterglow Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii controllers.

We'll be seeing the headsets and controllers later this week at E3 2012, and will, of course, let you know if they live up to our expectations.
