Counter-Strike, Expendables 2 Lead PSN Play Line-Up

Just like last year, Sony has answered Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade promotion with PlayStation Network Play, a summer program that offers big downloadable games with special bonuses.

This year, Sony is offering four games at $14.99 each ($11.99 for PlayStation Plus members) plus the opportunity for cash back via PSN vouchers depending on how many titles you buy. Purchasing two games gets you $3 back, three gets you $6 back and all four gets you $10 back.

This year, the line-up includes:

The Expendables 2 Video Game

On July 31st, The Expendables 2 will be available nearly three weeks ahead of its Xbox Live release on August 17th. The game is a co-op shooter that offers four-player support and challenge modes.

Sound Shapes

On August 7th, Sound Shapes will be available exclusively for PSN (and buying it on PS3 gets you a free copy of the Vita version as well). Sound Shapes is an awesome platformer that creates music while you play -- read about it here.

Papo & Yo

On August 14th, Papo & Yo (another PSN exclusive) will be available, telling the story of a young boy preventing his friend Monster from eating poisonous frogs (based on the creator’s father’s struggle with alcoholism). Papo & Yo is touching and emotional -- read about it here.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

On August 21st, the promotion will close with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. CS:GO is an objective-based first-person shooter that updates the gameplay of the original Counter-Strike. The game introduces new modes and lets up to 10 players play online, and features Move support on PS3.

Keep an eye out for reviews of each game as they arrive on PSN in the coming months.

Square Enix: Current Console Generation Has Lasted "Way Too Long"

Square Enix's worldwide technology director has said that the length of the current console generation is "the biggest mistake [Sony and Microsoft] ever made".

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Julien Merceron shared his opinion that those developers who grew bored of the current generation were pushed into exploring iOS and browsers, and were now unlikely to return to hardware.

We have Sony and Microsoft talking about this generation lasting seven, eight, nine or even 10 years and it's the biggest mistake they've ever made.

"We have Sony and Microsoft talking about this generation lasting seven, eight, nine or even 10 years and it's the biggest mistake they've ever made," he claimed.

"This generation has been way too long, and I say this because you have a lot of developers that work on a new platform, and perhaps will not succeed, so they will wait for the next generation, and will jump on that platform. You could not do that with this generation though. So these developers went elsewhere to see if the grass was greener. They found web browsers, they found iOS, they found other things and a lot of them won't come back to the hardware platforms. So you could look at it that thanks to Microsoft and Sony and the length of this generation, it helped the emergence of other platforms and helped them get strong before the next hardware comes out."

Merceron elaborated by suggesting that future generations could afford to be shorter, thanks to simpler hardware and increased online functionality.

He explained, "With a simple architecture you do give more chances to everybody, which I believe is very important based on the critical business situation we're in. Games will be more costly. If you start to make the entry bar really high, more studios will die, more publishers will die, there'll be less titles on platforms, etc. If you make it accessible, you give more chances to people, you'll have a better portfolio at launch , but now you also have a problem with your longevity.

Now you don't need to manage longevity by complexity of programming, because your longevity is ensured by your online model. And I would suggest that maybe we don't want long generations.

"Now you don't need to manage longevity by complexity of programming, because your longevity is ensured by your online model. And I would suggest that maybe we don't want long generations."

The worldwide technical director concluded by discussing the company's latest tech demo, Agni's Philosophy, and asserted developers will always be plagued by the Uncanny Valley.

"As soon as we ramp up the quality on graphics, this level of quality on facial animations won't be good enough. Some games succeed to be at the limit of the Uncanny Valley, but … the problem is that as rendering quality will go up, new problems will surface. The quality of the facial and body animations and the acting won't be good enough. So that is why as you evolve, you have to upgrade your physics, rendering and animations," he stated.

"It will always be a problem. As you push something, you have to recalibrate and rebalance these out. You can't have these stunning graphics while characters are acting funny on the screen."

It's Official: Windows 8 Available in Late October

It may not have an official date you can pin on the calendar, but Microsoft has finally revealed the month and week Windows 8 will go on sale.

At the company's Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto on Monday morning, corporate vice president of Windows Tami Reller announced that the new Windows 8 operating system would be released to manufacturing in less than a month - the first week of August, to be more precise.

That puts Windows 8 on track to be released to the public sometime during the last week of October - although Microsoft is vague on whether they're referring to the last full week (October 22-26) or the last three days (October 29-31).

For now, it's no matter: Windows 8 fans have been speculating and now they have a more precise timeframe to witness the bold new desktop and tablet OS parade across 231 markets worldwide, where it will be available in 109 languages.

"Windows 8 is simply the biggest deal from our company in at least 17 years," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer boasted during this morning's keynote address. "It's a huge opportunity for our partners, and a very big deal for Microsoft."

Microsoft previously announced that most Windows XP, Vista and 7 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for a mere $39.99, available as a downloadable installation when the OS debuts in October.

Redmond also took the opportunity to talk up the outgoing Windows 7, which has racked up an impressive 630 million licenses sold since its debut on October 22, 2009 (and counting). Will Windows 8 hit those lofty heights? Time will tell…

Microsoft's ExpertZone Reveals Halo 4 Details

An educational slideshow hosted on Microsoft's ExpertZone - a site designed to bring retailers up-to-speed with its products - has revealed new information about Halo 4.

So what do we know now that we didn't already know? The quiz reveals that Halo 4 will have 10 new weapons. A couple of these - The Light rifle and Scattershot - were already revealed during Microsoft's E3 press conference. Interestingly, one of the slides reveals that  for "the first time, the Master Chief will have a true nemesis" and that players will fight against "a new race, unlike anything seen before in Halo".

There will also be "2 new vehicles plus many of your favorites from the past".

That's still a bit sketchy, admittedly. But there are some concrete details relating to Spartan Ops, which is Halo 4's TV series-style DLC experience. 50 missions will be released per 'season', with five missions dropping every week for 10 weeks. Each mission is said to be "introduced with a high-quality cinematic video so that you are well-briefed before you embark on your mission." And with series 1 of Spartan Ops is 100% free, it's being described as "like getting two campaigns with one game".

LittleEnglishHaloBlog has screens of the slides from the presentation.

Are the Next-Gen Consoles Coming Too Late?

Microsoft and Sony really want you to wait a while before playing their next generation systems. They want you to sit tight.

Before launching anything new, they want to hold off until the last possible moment. They want to skip out of the tottering, crumbling edifice of the current generation just before it comes crashing to the ground.

Their anxiety about making the move is so great that they are prepared to allow Wii U a free run at the market for at least year, and they are even happy to wave each other through as first-to-market. Disappointingly, there has been none of the mind-games or competition on launch timing that we've come to expect (and enjoy) from hardware warfare. There is no sense of an arms race -- of two mighty rivals manfully striving to beat each other to the punch.

The reason is simple. The current generation is finally making money and declining at a seemingly manageable rate, adding much-needed loot to Sony and Microsoft’s coffers. In contrast, the next generation will cost a great deal of money and will continue to do so for years. And with both technology and consumer behavior changing fast, launching games consoles has never been riskier. In short, Sony and Microsoft have too much to lose by rushing to market, while Nintendo has nothing to gain by waiting.

Microsoft and Sony are seeing returns on their huge investments of the last decade. Game sales are declining but the businesses are largely predictable and clustered around big, profitable franchises. Also, they have finally reached a critical mass of online subscribers who are willing to buy highly profitable digital-only games. This is a situation both firms have invested heavily in achieving. They are not about to screw it all up by rendering their lead products obsolete.

As Microsoft’s Phil Spencer told me at E3, ”Our business is really in a sweet spot if you think about the installed base and the number of people -- the addressable audience -- of a platform like Xbox 360 right now. So as somebody who's running a publisher, a first-party publisher, but still, an entertainment publisher, it's a great time to be on Xbox. We've got tens of millions of people out there, so when we put out something like Minecraft, we sold two million units. That's a great business.”

And Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton is equally good at spinning positive on the company’s reluctance to move forward. He told Gametrailers, “We have never been first [to launch], we have never been cheapest, it is about being the best. If you can build a better machine and it is going to come out a little bit later, that is better than rushing something to market that is going to run out of gas in the long term."

Credit: Gamasutra

It’s interesting that the third-party publishers are in no rush for their first-party cousins to make the leap. Given that their sales are declining, you might expect some sort of call-to-action. Not so. One leading exec told me that he is “delighted” that neither Sony nor Microsoft had anything to say about new hardware at E3. The publishers do not want you saving up to buy a new console next year, based on fancy promises and lush previews. They want you buying their current-gen AAA games this year. They don't want you thinking that there's something better around the corner. They want you to be happy with your lot.

Of course, they are seeing serious declines in games retail sales in 2012, but they still don’t want the market to do anything rash, like introduce exciting new products. Because that would trigger an expensive third-party arms race of polishing and marketing all that new IP they’ve all been secretly working on. For now, the game companies would rather manage the gentle stroll of decline than face the extreme challenge of a new generation.

But this conservatism is risky. Downward trends have a habit of seeming predictable right up to the point when they are not. If Malcolm Gladwell is to be believed, it’s the trend-setters, the most knowledgeable consumers, who make the difference, who change behavior so sharply that it precipitates calamitous consequences. In other words, people like you make all the difference.

The gaming industry relies very heavily on trend-setters, just the sort of gamers who are most impatient for new hardware, and most likely to set buying trends for games on old hardware. The whole strategy relies on you continuing to be excited about the current generation, and continuing to influence the mass market by your enthusiasm. And sure, there are lots of things to like about the games coming out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. But should that excitement wane, the consequences are dire. The big games season of 2012 looks dandy, but 2013? Maybe that's a year too far.

Right now the business is relying on the millions of people who’ll go out and buy the new Call of Duty. But the people who really matter are the first million who bought the original Call of Duty and put the whole thing in motion. And, by the end of 2013, these guys will have been playing the same console for an unprecedented seven years (PS3) or eight (Xbox 360) without a new generational introduction.

Let’s just come out and say it. The current generation is old.

Meanwhile sales of retail games are dropping, fast. Earlier this month, in his excellent regular column for Gamasutra, statistics-analyst Matt Matthews made this startling observation:

“In each of 2008, 2009, and 2010 the 50 million annual unit software point was crossed sometime in March. But in 2011, it fell back into early April, indicating a significant slowdown. This year, unit sales just crossed 51 million units at the very end of May.”

Stranger's Wrath HD Devs "Given Up on Microsoft"

The developer behind Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD has "given up on Microsoft" over the company's failure to digitally release the game.

Speaking to VG247, Just Add Water head Stewart Gilray clarified earlier remarks which led many to believe that the XBLA port of the title had been cancelled.  In actual fact, he suggests Microsoft's lack of co-operation is all that has kept the game off the platform.

What I said was that we’d given up on Microsoft, not that we’d given up on 360. What I meant was that we’d given up on Microsoft doing anything with it.

He explained, "What I said was that we’d given up on Microsoft, not that we’d given up on 360.  What I meant was that we’d given up on Microsoft doing anything with it."

The code for an Xbox 360 HD port of the game, which originally launched on Xbox in 2005, has been complete for a while.  Gilray is especially disappointed by the company's unresponsiveness as it was apparently Microsoft who approached JAW about bring the game to its console shortly after a PS3 version was announced.

"Two weeks [after announcing the PS3 version] Microsoft contacts us and asked if we wanted to a 360 version," he noted. "We said yes.

"Just before Christmas, they came back and said that they didn’t want it because it’d already been on a Microsoft platform. We said, ‘Hang on a minute. We didn’t come to you. You approached us.’ They said, ‘Yeah, but politics here says that we don’t want it on XBLA.’"

To try and resolve the issue, the idea was then floated that Stranger's Wrath HD could be distributed via the Games on Demand service rather than the XBLA.  This fell apart, however, when it became clear that the game would have to retail for $20; a problem, given that it was already available on the Playstation Network for $15.

A last ditch effort to get the game out on Xbox 360 happened in January 2012, but JAW was told that Microsoft's team had gone off the idea as it had already been released on the PS3 some months earlier.

We can’t wait forever. If we did, PS4 and 720 would be out.

"We said, ‘We’ve been talking to you for over 15 months now’,” explained Gilray. “‘We haven’t stalled. You’ve been stalling us. If you’d had come to us six months ago and said fine, we would have held back the PS3 version until the 360 version was ready.’

"We can’t wait forever. If we did, PS4 and 720 would be out. We have to, at some point, say, ‘We tried. End of.’ And that’s sooner rather than later now. But people can’t accuse us of not trying.”

JAW is currently in negotiations with two publishers who are said to be interested in helping them get the game out on the XBLA, but nothing concrete has materialised as yet.  If the game does ever get to see the light of day on Xbox 360 it may not be the version we're used to, with Gilray explaining, "because Microsoft dragged us along for 15 months, we’re now having to add new content to the 360 version."

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD was announced in 2010 and launched on PS3 in December 2011.  A PS Vita version is still in development, with no set release date.

E3 2012: Microsoft Press Conference -- 5 Biggest Winners & Losers

With another Microsoft E3 press briefing in the books, who are the biggest winners and losers? We were live in the audience at the Galen Center and we're ready to pick the top -- and bottom -- five. First, let's meet the conference's biggest winners. Click over to page 2 for the losers.

5. Xbox SmartGlass

Let's be honest: the concept of a Wii U-like tablet application meant to interact with your games and entertainment apps could flame out in spectacular fashion in an Xbox Live Vision type of way. We're going to take the SmartGlass-half-full approach here, however (sorry). Though we could not possibly care less about having our tablet tell us where we are in Westeros while we're watching Game of Thrones, the gaming possibilities here could bear tasty fruit. Drawing up a play (or even just sorting through your playbook quickly) in Madden NFL 13? Love it. Having a Halo Bible-esque information database that interacts with what we're seeing on Halo 4's mysterious new planet of Requiem? We're in. Naturally, Microsoft only mentioned a Windows 8 version of this, but they're going to have to swallow their pride and put out an iOS version of SmartGlass if they want to have any hope whatsoever of this catching on.

4. South Park: The Stick of Truth

To paraphrase from one of the greatest comedies of our generation, that was frickin' sweet. Trey Parker and Matt Stone themselves came out on stage to introduce the game, eschewing the teleprompter and mocking the SmartGlass demo that preceded it to boot. Better, their game looks amazing...not literally, of course, as the duo were quick to mock the "sh*tty" look of their own show. But to that end, the game does, in fact, look exactly like the show, and is fantastically structured in such a way that they're able to incorporate nearly everything and everyone in the South Park universe, from Mr. Slave to Jesus to a fully rendered and navigable town. And even in the trailer, Parker and Stone's humor brightly shone through in the game. Screw you guys, we're going home...to watch this trailer over and over again.

3. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist

What do you get when you take some of the best elements from every Splinter Cell game so far? You get knifed in the face by Blacklist. Yes, the Tri-Goggled One is back, and he's got a knife to cut through cloth, Sticky Shockers to zap enemies dumb enough to stand in pools of water, the Mark and Execute gameplay introduced in Splinter Cell: Conviction, and -- oh yeah -- Spies vs. Mercenaries multiplayer mode. You'll also get a healthy dose of painful interrogations that always end up with enemies having their bones snapped like twigs and/or their eyeballs gouged out by Sam's knife. One potentially giant problem: longtime Sam Fisher voice actor Michael Ironside was noticeably absent. If he doesn't end up lending his signature pipes to Sam in the final game, we're going to (seriously consider but not actually) cancel our pre-order.

2. Halo 4

A lot is riding on Halo 4 for Microsoft. It's a new development team at 343 Industries and the start of a new trilogy aimed at carrying the franchise into the next generation of consoles. It's also the long-awaited return of Master Chief after the previous pair of Halo titles were clearly lacking in the badass hero department. The good news is that 343 came out smelling like a rose after debuting the first campaign footage of their debut project. A dark, mysterious new Forerunner enemy was revealed as Master Chief trudged through the jungles of Requiem in pursuit of a fallen UNSC ship. The sharp new graphics engine (particularly the lighting) clearly separated Halo 4 from its predecessors, while the from-scratch sound effects rocked the entire arena. More importantly, the new Forerunner weapon we got to see -- it literally pieced itself together in Chief's hands -- proved to be a badass railgun-y boomstick.

1. Tomb Raider

Sorry, Master Chief, but the lovely Lara stole the Microsoft Press Briefing...and our hearts. We first saw a promising "vertical slice" of the Tomb Raider reboot a full year ago, and it appears developer Crystal Dynamics has spent the 365 days since wringing every last bit of potential out of Croft's re-imagining. Visually, the game looks almost next-gen -- you probably wouldn't believe us if we told you that this game is built off of the same engine used to power Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Gorgeous vistas, incredibly detailed character models, and stunning art direction highlight the graphics, while gameplay is simply off the charts. Everything was on display, from bow-and-arrow combat to platforming to free-roaming elements. And to think that this game has another 7-8 months of development time and polish left. Tomb Raider was unquestionably the highlight of the Microsoft Press Conference.

$300 Xbox 360 Racing Bundle Coming in June

Need a new 250GB Xbox 360, Forza 4, and a racing wheel in one package? How fortunate, because Microsoft has announced the Xbox 360 250GB Racing Bundle, which includes exactly that.

Forza Motorsport 4 and its wireless racing wheel would run more than $100 on their own, so scoring them in the same box as a slim Xbox 360 with a humongous hard drive is a righteous deal. The previous 250GB bundle included Fable III and Halo Reach.

Look at this box. It's a pretty nice box.

Gear-heads with $299 burning a hole in their pocket can look forward to the bundle in the middle of June.

Avatar Motocross Screenshots Tease E3 Announcement

Two screenshots for an unannounced Avatar-based motocross game have surfaced on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade blog, PlayXBLA. It's worth noting the image files' titles: They've been labeled as "AMX mystery," which likely points to an Avatar Motocross title for the to-be-announced game.

The images come attached to an E3 announcement tease, and tell us very little about the game itself. There are avatars. They ride dirtbikes. Sweet jumps and crazy tricks are apparently present. Exhibit A:

That's not how you ride a bike.

The only other real hint we get about Avatar Motocross is in its second picture, which tells us it's a racing game with either fist-bumping or face-punching. The odds we'll get to smash Avatars in a Road Rash-like fashion is slim, but don't lose hope, friends.

Check my math, but that looks like two bikes. Two? I got two.

We've reached out to Microsoft asking for some kind of confirmation about Avatar Motocross, but in all likelihood we'll need to wait 'til E3 to learn more about it.

What do you think this is? Rare's next game? A Joy Ride spinoff? A Motocross Madness reboot? Go nuts in the comments below.

Windows Phone Surpasses the iPhone in China

Microsoft has reached a milestone in one of the largest smartphone markets by passing up Apple's iPhone in China.

According to WMPoweruser, COO for the Greater China Region at Microsoft Michel van der Bel has stated that Windows Phone 7 has grabbed 7% of the market share just two months after the platform's regional launch, trumping Apple's 6% of the pie.

The big fish is still quite a distance away, with Android accounting for a commanding 69% of the market.

Halo 4 Box Art Revealed Thanks To Group Puzzle-Solving Effort

Microsoft is using the lure of Halo 4's box art as an excuse to teach the fan community about a little thing called cooperation. A series of e-mails were sent out to the community, with each one containing a chunk of an image and a note that read: "Your piece of the Halo 4 puzzle." The NeoGAF hivemind then put its many heads together to assemble the image (via Kotaku), revealing the official box art for Halo 4.

It's a pretty sweet image, wouldn't you say? We all got our first glimpse of the post-Halo 3 Master Chief in an announcement trailer at E3 2011. News has been trickling out slowly since then, with the latest big one being the long-awaited confirmation of the game's release date: November 6, 2012. We'll certainly be seeing more of the game at E3 2012, so stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks.
