Counter-Strike, Expendables 2 Lead PSN Play Line-Up

Just like last year, Sony has answered Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade promotion with PlayStation Network Play, a summer program that offers big downloadable games with special bonuses.

This year, Sony is offering four games at $14.99 each ($11.99 for PlayStation Plus members) plus the opportunity for cash back via PSN vouchers depending on how many titles you buy. Purchasing two games gets you $3 back, three gets you $6 back and all four gets you $10 back.

This year, the line-up includes:

The Expendables 2 Video Game

On July 31st, The Expendables 2 will be available nearly three weeks ahead of its Xbox Live release on August 17th. The game is a co-op shooter that offers four-player support and challenge modes.

Sound Shapes

On August 7th, Sound Shapes will be available exclusively for PSN (and buying it on PS3 gets you a free copy of the Vita version as well). Sound Shapes is an awesome platformer that creates music while you play -- read about it here.

Papo & Yo

On August 14th, Papo & Yo (another PSN exclusive) will be available, telling the story of a young boy preventing his friend Monster from eating poisonous frogs (based on the creator’s father’s struggle with alcoholism). Papo & Yo is touching and emotional -- read about it here.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

On August 21st, the promotion will close with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. CS:GO is an objective-based first-person shooter that updates the gameplay of the original Counter-Strike. The game introduces new modes and lets up to 10 players play online, and features Move support on PS3.

Keep an eye out for reviews of each game as they arrive on PSN in the coming months.

Ghost Rider Producer Falls for Fifty Shades of Grey Movie

Universal Pictures and Focus Features have hired the Oscar-winning team behind The Social Network to produce their screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, that best-selling erotic romance novel you can't avoid that started as Twilight fan-fic.

The studios announced Monday that Michael De Luca (whose credits also include Ghost Rider 1 and 2, Fright Night, and Moneyball) and Dana Brunetti (Fanboys, 21, Safe) have come aboard to produce the adaptation of the E. L. James lit trilogy, which follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele.

“At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen,” said Universal Pictures Co-Chairman, Donna Langley, in a statement. “Mike and Dana’s credits more than exemplify what we need in creative partners and we’re glad to have them as part of our team."

Adventure Time Creator Dishes on the Season One DVD and More

Mathematical! Fans have been asking, and Warner Home Video and Cartoon Network have finally answered. Adventure Time: The Complete First Season will come to DVD this week (look for our review tomorrow).

In honor of this exciting release, we sat down with Adventure Time creator Pendleton (Pen) Ward to discuss what it takes for young prospective artists to break into the industry, the direction of the show, as well as Ward's amusing contribution to the DVD bonus features.

Before Ward was famous, he visited Simpsons creator Matt Groening to discuss what it took to make it in the animation industry. While Ward could not recall what transpired during that chat, he did offer some inspiration for young artists.

“My advice comes off as generic, but I think it's important advice – and that's to keep drawing.” Ward suggests. “I think if you persist, you keep drawing, you're already one step ahead of anybody who's quit. And that's probably the biggest challenge when you're learning, whether you're drawing, or really anything at all – is to keep doing it.”

Even in the show's early days, Pen Ward was always working hard at the series, attempting to craft a show that was not only fun and funny, but also refreshing and original.

“Every day I'm just focused on trying to keep the ideas fresh and interesting.” Ward states. “For example, I wanted to put a monkey in an episode, and one of the writers, Jesse Moynihan, told me not to. He thought it was jumping the shark, that is was just cheap humor. I told him, you're right, you're right. So we took it out.”

It's this sense of originality that's turned Adventure Time from a cult series into something of a phenomenon. But Ward isn't really phased by the show's new found mainstream stardom. “I don't have a real concept of it, honestly,” Ward said. “We just work on the show every day and keep doing it. But I see how much people really like it at Comic-Con, which is a lot of fun.”

Instead, Ward spends his time focused on the story. “We're always trying to top ourselves and make each episode better than the last,” Ward said. “We don't want to become stale.”

Ward is currently putting the finishing touches on season four, while also drafting episodes for the show's upcoming fifth season. While he remained mum on all the juicy details, he did offer hints as to what fans can expect. “In future episodes you'll get to see more of the history of Ooo.” Ward offers. “There's also a few more origin stories for some of the characters. There's going to be another Fiona Cake episode coming up, which features Marshall Lee more.”

In the meantime, fans can explore the various bonus features found on the season one DVD. One special feature was actually shot on Ward's own iPhone, using a handy $150 Steadicam unit. “I wanted to put something cool on the disc,” Ward explains. “I wanted to interview everybody and put it all in one shot. Then we decided to put animation on it.” The end results are nothing short of bizarrely humorous, with the featurette almost playing like a bonus episode of the show.

But the featurette isn't the only goodie Ward was excited about. Playing as sort of a complement to the “Mom-entary” from the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg film, The Other Guys, Ward sought out another helper to add some flavor to the supplemental material. “There's a commentary from my mother with Polly Lou Livingston, who voices Tree Trunks,” Ward admits with a laugh. “It's pretty funny.”

Obviously, because this first season took quite a while to make its way to DVD, fans might be worried it'll be a few more years down the line before future seasons arrive, but Ward attempts to put those worries to rest. “I'm positive they'll be coming,” Ward assures. “I'll have to stay up and do some more special features, too.”

With the release of Seth MacFarlane's Ted in theaters, naturally the thought of doing something live action came up. Ward was fascinated by the idea of doing a feature-length movie. “I think it would be great.” Ward said. “I want to do a live-action movie with the Adventure Time characters, actually. That would be interesting.”

We certainly hope he gets the chance to do that in the near future. But, in the meantime, you can check out Adventure Time on Cartoon Network, or pick up the show on DVD or digital download.

Premiere Date for Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

A couple weeks ago, Nickelodeon released the first trailer for its new animated reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, the network has set a premiere date for the CG show and will be airing two back-to-back episodes on Saturday, September 29 at 11am.

According to EW.com's Inside TV, Nick has created 26 half-hour episodes featuring a funnier, quirkier team of turtles: Leonardo (American Pie's Jason Biggs), Raphael (The Lord of the Rings' Sean Astin), Michelangelo (Teen Titan's Greg Cipes), and Donatello (Rob Paulsen, the original voice of Raphael in the '80s and '90s cartoon).

Rounding out the cast is Mae Whitman as April O'Neil, Hoon Lee as Master Splinter and Kevin Michael Richardson as Shredder.

Rainbow Moon Review

SideQuest Studios may be an unknown quantity to most gamers, but for the hardcore PlayStation Network audience, the small German developer has made a name for itself. Its two previous titles -- side-scrolling shooters known as Soldner X and Soldner X-2 – were popular forays into a retro genre. And for its third outing, SideQuest Studios decided to throw a curveball in the form of an equally retro RPG called Rainbow Moon.

Rainbow Moon may have a deceptive name suggesting that it’s more of an ‘80s cartoon than a hardcore role playing experience, but rest assured that it’s very much the latter. Taking inspiration from a variety of games from the past, Rainbow Moon combines obsessive grinding, equipment and character upgrading with strategy-based battling. While it doesn’t quite soar to the heights occupied by the best RPGs ever created, it’s still a worthwhile purchase for those looking to dump scores of hours into something that we don’t see too much of today: a bona fide old-school RPG.

The plot of Rainbow Moon is simple and, like many old-school RPGs, largely unimportant. The game’s protagonist, Baldren, finds himself stranded on a mystical satellite aptly known as Rainbow Moon. The same dimensional rip that deposited him there also brought a plethora of monsters to the once serene moon, and it’s up to him, along with the various characters that join him on his adventure, to rid the moon of its unwelcome new inhabitants before getting back home. Don’t expect a story in the vein of Final Fantasy VI or Wild Arms here; Rainbow Moon emphasizes mechanics and gameplay far more than plot. Mountains of roughly-translated (yet strangely endearing) text and an almost complete lack of character development affirm this fact.

As soon as the game begins, it becomes impossible to ignore Rainbow Moon’s crisp graphics and vivid colors. Sure, the character designs leave something to be desired, but the enemies you fight might as well have been lifted straight out of Dragon Warrior on your NES. Battle a poison-hurling scorpion here, a laser-firing mech there, or a fast-moving zombie in another locale; the variety of enemies is fairly vast, but expect palate swaps as enemy types get stronger (no doubt a nod to the RPG glory days of yore). Rainbow Moon also benefits from a strong soundtrack with some truly catchy tunes and a limited voice track that gives virtually all characters you speak with quirky “hello” and “goodbye” sound bytes bound to put a smile on your face with their ridiculousness.

But let’s get down to the nitty-gritty: gameplay and, more succinctly, combat. As you explore, you’ll run into enemies both directly (like in Chrono Trigger) and via random battles (like in Final Fantasy IV). Regardless of how an enemy party is engaged, things typically play out the same way. Your party – which can consist of up to three characters at a time – will be pitted against a hostile crew that may only contain a single enemy, 20 enemies, or anywhere in between. Even if the way you initially get launched into battle proves conventional, the actual fights themselves are anything but.

Don’t assume you’re going to get a deep combat experience like Final Fantasy Tactics here, but you’ll still get something very much inspired by that kind of game. Turn-based combat plays out on a grid, forcing you to think more tactically than many other games in the genre. Your characters will have various skills at their disposal, varying speeds at which they move, and even a certain amount of moves they get to execute each turn. Enemy and character strengths and weaknesses also play a huge part in combat. Fighting is only marginally deep, but still exceptionally satisfying and quite different from what you’d find in other likeminded games.

Outside of battle, Rainbow Moon assaults players with all manner of options, upgrades, equipment and more. The game’s two currency types – Rainbow Coins and Rainbow Pearls – serve different purposes that make your party stronger in equally different ways. Coins purchase items, weapons, armor, skill scrolls and more, while Pearls upgrade specific character traits ranging from strength and defense to speed and luck. Purchased equipment can be further upgraded by using items found during and after battle. These items provide varying types of permanent statistical boosts to your gear that can make a strong character setup even stronger.

All of these features mix seamlessly with a fairly straight-forward questing and side-questing system that’s shallow on story but still fun to work your way through. The main quest often sends you from character to character for brief conversations, an occasional fetch quest or a foray into a deadly dungeon. Side quests have you doing all kinds of activities, from retrieving lost items to killing devious enemies. Combined with Rainbow Moon’s vast map to explore – rife with geographic diversity and plenty of territory to cover – the game is dense. For the audience that this game is aimed squarely at, that’s a good thing.

The Walking Dead: Episode 2 Having Issues on PSN

Today, The Walking Dead: Episode 2 launched on PlayStation Network. But unfortunately for many players trying to get into the experience, they’re unable to. IGN users rhoadesclark informed us of a thread on Telltale Games’ message boards chronicling the issue. As of the time of this story’s publish, the thread spans 14 pages.

The problem is associated with trying to launch the game. From dozens of accounts on Telltale’s message boards, when the game is downloaded, installed and launched, the game refuses to load and kicks gamers back to the CrossMediaBar (XMB). So the problem isn’t somehow in-game; the problem literally doesn’t let people play the game at all.

Telltale Games employees are trying to get to the bottom of the problem by asking users on the message boards questions, including if the game was deleted and then reinstalled and by which method the game was purchased (either individually or as part of the season pass). But there’s still no word on a fix, or when it might be forthcoming.

The problem isn’t only concentrated on Telltale’s forums. I put out a Tweet asking if any of my followers were having issues. They are. We’ve reached out to Telltale Games for official comment and, hopefully, a word on when these issues may be fixed. We’ll update when we hear back. In the meantime, let us know in the comments if you're having issues with The Walking Dead Episode 2 on PSN, and what the nature of your particular problems are, if any.

Uncharted 1 and 2 Coming to PSN Next Week

Today, the Official PlayStation Blogcast confirmed that Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will be coming to PlayStation Network this coming Tuesday, June 26th, as digital releases.

Better yet, the games will be available on the cheap. Each one will cost $20, but should you choose to buy them together, you’ll save $10. Both games have Trophies and should be available in their complete form as they were on Blu-ray.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune came to PlayStation 3 in November of 2007. We gave it a 9.1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves came to PlayStation 3 nearly two years later. We gave it a 9.5. Playing both should prepare you for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, a game we gave a a perfect 10. Both were developed by Naughty Dog, the Sony-owned studio responsible for the Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter series.

Uncharted and Uncharted 2 Coming to PSN

If for some ungodly reason you still haven't played Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, the PlayStation Network shall be your salvation. June 26th, both games from developer Naughty Dog hit the store for undisclosed prices.

No word if these digital goodies are coming to other countries, but if you are here in the United States, heads up that all the Uncharted 2 DLC is free on the PlayStation Store right now. The freebies end on June 26th, so download the multiplayer packs now if you're planning on downloading the games then.

While you wait, watch these and marvel at how awkward IGN video reviews were before we used written scripts. Mainly me. Roper was fine.

Adventure Time Game Coming To Nintendo DS And 3DS

It's Adventure Time, everyone! Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d you steal our garbage?!, a game based on the oddly hysterical cartoon from Cartoon Network is coming this fall for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. Described as a “unique action-adventure experience," Adventure Time allows you to put on the shoes of both Finn and Jake and go on an adventure through the Land of Ooo to find out why the Ice King is stealing everyone's trash.

Series creator Pendleton Ward is working with the developer WayForward on the game, and WayForward are really good, so I'll bet we're in for a strange and enlightening DS game.

No word yet on whether Princess Bubblegum, Marceline the Vampire Queen and the great BMO show up in the game, but I can only assume they do.

Also: Adventure Time is totally great.

The Unfinished Swan preview

The Unfinished Swan preview

Sony has been making a huge push for independent games as of late, looking to make PlayStation Network the home for original efforts that deserve to find an audience.  Shawn McGrath’s Dyad is certainly making a few waves, as is the upcoming Papo & Yo.  Joining the party this week is The Unfinished Swan, a game that began development way back in 2008 under the guidance of a young Ian Dallas.  Now, with the help of his team at Giant Sparrow, it’s just about ready for its unveiling on PlayStation Network this year.  Ian and his fellow programmers recently invited us to get a first look at the game in action.

There’s an interesting story behind The Unfinished Swan.  A boy finds himself orphaned when his mother passes on, and the only thing he has to remember her by is a series of unfinished paintings, as she never found the motivation to complete them.  Upon being transferred to an orphanage, he’s told he can only take one with him, so he chooses an Unfinished Swan drawing, since that’s most endearing to him.

One night, the Swan actually disappears from the painting, and on his quest to go searching for it, the boy finds himself in an alternate world, one which was once ruled by a king and has now been left in a solid white state.  Seriously.  Everything — the walls, the ceiling, the floor, the statues — have been colored white.  In order to navigate his way through the world and find a way home, the boy must literally paint his way out by throwing paintballs at everything, staining objects a solid black (and possibly other colors later on in the game) and eventually finding his way around.

The way that The Unfinished Swan uses a world that isn’t there one minute and then comes completely to life is startling, and a rather neat effect.  Each object you hit with paintballs reacts to the splatters in real time, so you can see the forms of statues, collapsible walls and other things as you hit them.  It plays out in a first-person perspective, and it works remarkably well.  Furthermore, objects you paint stay painted, as you’re able to see by peering out into the distance and seeing what’s been impacted by your paint.

Along with painting your way around this white world, you’re also able to discover bits and pieces of the story, figuring out why the king left this world the way he did, and the significance of the swan itself.  You can also locate hidden items, including little swan footprints and balloons that you can collect in each stage, which enable you to unlock a few Trophies.  In addition, the game supports PlayStation Move, if you’re looking for a new game to support that peripheral.

Though it may look simplistic at first, The Unfinished Swan has a superb graphic engine — one that really sucks you in as you discover bits and pieces of the world during your journey.  It’s definitely a startling effort that’ll shake up the PlayStation Network, perhaps even in the same way Journey did last month (but for different reasons, obviously).

The Unfinished Swan also includes a mysterious “Toys” extra feature, though Dallas and his team are keeping that under wraps until around E3 time.  We’ll learn more about it then.

For a game that’s been in the works for some time, we’re happy to see that The Unfinished Swan will soon be, um, finished?  Released.  Yeah, that’s a better word.  We’ll let you know how it’s progressing when it shows at E3 next month
