Dredd Sequel Could be Origin Story

With the Dredd press tour ramping up in preparation for San Diego Comic-Con, the film’s star Karl Urban and screenwriter Alex Garland appeared at the London Film and Comic Con this past weekend to talk about the movie.

And amongst the many things they discussed was the potential for Judge Dredd sequels, with Bleeding Cool reporting Garland as saying the following...

“We’ll see a sequel if the gross is above $50m in the US. It’s a simple financial equation. We’re an independent movie.”

And in terms of what those sequels might revolve around, Garland explained that the Dark Judges could make an appearance…

“I wrote death into this script, but it didn’t feel right for the first film. I thought it felt right but after about 16 drafts it really didn’t work out. I needed to have set up the city and Dredd first before taking on what is essentially a riff on the Judges. You need to know what the Judges are before you can subvert them.

“I wrote a second script which was about Dredd going out to the Cursed Earth. That was rejected for similar reasons.

“If they want to make sequels, I’ve got a story that goes from this one into the origins of Dredd and the city. Then the third one would have a strange, existential attack from the Dark Judges.”

So 2,000AD fans, is this the way you’d like to see the Judge Dredd story progress?

Nolan: No JLA Movie or Batman Reboot for Me

While doing press for the impending release of The Dark Knight Rises, director Christopher Nolan was asked if he was involved with Warner Bros.' planned Justice League of America movie.

"No, none at all," Nolan said, according to Entertainment Weekly. "We’re finished with all we’re doing with Batman. This is the end of our take on this character. ... I’ve got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any Justice League project."

This lack of any future involvement with Batman movies also extends to any potential reboot of the character, which contradicts past reports that he would essentially godfather the franchise's future.

"Obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they’re going to do with him," said Nolan, adding that he and his team have told the Batman story they wanted to tell and the character will live on for future filmmakers to interpret.

Review: Sony's E3 2012 PlayStation 3 Conference

Games industry press conferences aren’t about facts and announcements. They are about emotions and feelings.

Excitement is the absolute minimum emotional level of engagement that E3‘s millions of marketing dollars are required to achieve, thus the flashing lights and blaring drums and whooping celebs.

But the organizers must strive for a higher plane, a place where we the viewers thrum with booming heart-beat and moistening eye.

Big emotion, edge-of-your-seat stuff came from two games, one at the beginning of the presentation and one at the end.

Unfortunately, in between we suffered eons of boredom as Sony trotted through its corporate agenda of keeping Move on the map, and half-heartedly saving Vita's miserable hide.

First, the good stuff.

Beyond: Two Souls a PS3-exclusive from Quantic Dream, offered up taut drama and that rare thing, a central video game character, Jodie Holmes, who knows how to shut the hell up and still be interesting. There was more emotional electricity offered here, in an exchange between cop and quiet girl,  than a horde of hysterical blood-lust buffoons on the rampage, chattering their inanities.

David Cage's work isn't to everyone's taste and accusations that his games lack action will always stick. But for anyone tired of bows and arrows and sliced throats, here was an alternative, a story rooted in human experience. There aren’t many developers who will begin their schtick with, “Death is the biggest mystery of mankind.” And by ‘death’ Cage was referring to the extinction of self, as opposed to a hammer-blow to an NPC’s cranium.

Even so, few games are willing to entirely forgo action. Holmes’ major line came at the end of her appearance, “Tell them to leave me the f*** alone because next time I’ll kill everyone.”

Shown at the very end of Sony’s 1.5 hour presentation, The Last of Us is a fascinating world, our own but broken, post-apocalypse done with colors and authenticity. It's also, it turns out, a game that involves extreme violence. In this demo, main character Joel sneaks around before basically killing everyone who gets in his way. This isn't to disparage what, for many, is top of their most-wanted list. It's a gorgeous game with an interesting relationship at its core, between Joel and a girl called Ellie.

E3 2012: The Last of Us Gameplay Footage Debuted

During its E3 press conference today, Sony showed new footage from The Last of Us.

In the demo shown, Joel and Ellie are in Rivers Cafe and exit to find a flooded city street.

They soon wander (passing a movie poster for Dawn of the Wolf) and end up in what was once a fancy hotel.

Joel soon encounters men in a hotel room and fights with them. Ellie throws a brick at one and Joel is soon in a shootout. He battles against two guys, bashing one into the floor.

Using materials, Joel creates a molotov cocktail and throes it at enemies, burning one alive. Joel soon gets in a hand-to-hand struggle and Ellie attacks the man he's fighting with from behind. He elbows her and Joel pounces. Joel pulls a gun and the man begs not to be shot; Joel shoots him anyway.

E3 2012: Exclusive Far Cry 3 DLC Coming to PS3

At Sony's E3 2012 Playstation press conference, Ubisoft announced in passing that the Playstation 3 version of Far Cry 3 will receive "exclusive DLC." No additional details have yet been announced. With its emphasis on cooperative and competitive multiplayer, it seems likely that multiplayer map and/or skin DLC is likely planned, although we will just have to wait and see what DLC plans Ubisoft has for its upcoming "insane" FPS.

In the meantime gamers eager for more on Far Cry 3 can read IGN's extensive single-player impressions.

E3 2012: Microsoft Press Conference -- 5 Biggest Winners & Losers

With another Microsoft E3 press briefing in the books, who are the biggest winners and losers? We were live in the audience at the Galen Center and we're ready to pick the top -- and bottom -- five. First, let's meet the conference's biggest winners. Click over to page 2 for the losers.

5. Xbox SmartGlass

Let's be honest: the concept of a Wii U-like tablet application meant to interact with your games and entertainment apps could flame out in spectacular fashion in an Xbox Live Vision type of way. We're going to take the SmartGlass-half-full approach here, however (sorry). Though we could not possibly care less about having our tablet tell us where we are in Westeros while we're watching Game of Thrones, the gaming possibilities here could bear tasty fruit. Drawing up a play (or even just sorting through your playbook quickly) in Madden NFL 13? Love it. Having a Halo Bible-esque information database that interacts with what we're seeing on Halo 4's mysterious new planet of Requiem? We're in. Naturally, Microsoft only mentioned a Windows 8 version of this, but they're going to have to swallow their pride and put out an iOS version of SmartGlass if they want to have any hope whatsoever of this catching on.

4. South Park: The Stick of Truth

To paraphrase from one of the greatest comedies of our generation, that was frickin' sweet. Trey Parker and Matt Stone themselves came out on stage to introduce the game, eschewing the teleprompter and mocking the SmartGlass demo that preceded it to boot. Better, their game looks amazing...not literally, of course, as the duo were quick to mock the "sh*tty" look of their own show. But to that end, the game does, in fact, look exactly like the show, and is fantastically structured in such a way that they're able to incorporate nearly everything and everyone in the South Park universe, from Mr. Slave to Jesus to a fully rendered and navigable town. And even in the trailer, Parker and Stone's humor brightly shone through in the game. Screw you guys, we're going home...to watch this trailer over and over again.

3. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist

What do you get when you take some of the best elements from every Splinter Cell game so far? You get knifed in the face by Blacklist. Yes, the Tri-Goggled One is back, and he's got a knife to cut through cloth, Sticky Shockers to zap enemies dumb enough to stand in pools of water, the Mark and Execute gameplay introduced in Splinter Cell: Conviction, and -- oh yeah -- Spies vs. Mercenaries multiplayer mode. You'll also get a healthy dose of painful interrogations that always end up with enemies having their bones snapped like twigs and/or their eyeballs gouged out by Sam's knife. One potentially giant problem: longtime Sam Fisher voice actor Michael Ironside was noticeably absent. If he doesn't end up lending his signature pipes to Sam in the final game, we're going to (seriously consider but not actually) cancel our pre-order.

2. Halo 4

A lot is riding on Halo 4 for Microsoft. It's a new development team at 343 Industries and the start of a new trilogy aimed at carrying the franchise into the next generation of consoles. It's also the long-awaited return of Master Chief after the previous pair of Halo titles were clearly lacking in the badass hero department. The good news is that 343 came out smelling like a rose after debuting the first campaign footage of their debut project. A dark, mysterious new Forerunner enemy was revealed as Master Chief trudged through the jungles of Requiem in pursuit of a fallen UNSC ship. The sharp new graphics engine (particularly the lighting) clearly separated Halo 4 from its predecessors, while the from-scratch sound effects rocked the entire arena. More importantly, the new Forerunner weapon we got to see -- it literally pieced itself together in Chief's hands -- proved to be a badass railgun-y boomstick.

1. Tomb Raider

Sorry, Master Chief, but the lovely Lara stole the Microsoft Press Briefing...and our hearts. We first saw a promising "vertical slice" of the Tomb Raider reboot a full year ago, and it appears developer Crystal Dynamics has spent the 365 days since wringing every last bit of potential out of Croft's re-imagining. Visually, the game looks almost next-gen -- you probably wouldn't believe us if we told you that this game is built off of the same engine used to power Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Gorgeous vistas, incredibly detailed character models, and stunning art direction highlight the graphics, while gameplay is simply off the charts. Everything was on display, from bow-and-arrow combat to platforming to free-roaming elements. And to think that this game has another 7-8 months of development time and polish left. Tomb Raider was unquestionably the highlight of the Microsoft Press Conference.

E3 2012: Report - Wii U Price Will Be 30,000 Yen, Says Nikkei

Japanese news giant Nikkei almost always get a major scoop or two on Nintendo's plans the day before the company's E3 press conference each year, and this year appears to be no different – the paper is reporting that it knows the Wii U launch price.

30,000 yen. That converts to about $383 in U.S. dollars, £249 in British pounds or €306 Euros, by today's exchange rates.

The information comes to us via Andriasang, responsible for translating the original report. According to them, Nikkei's sources for stating this price point are unclear – the paper could have received an inside tip, or it could simply be throwing out a likely number.

It may be a while before we find out whether this price report turns out to be accurate or not, though, as Nintendo has previously stated that no information on price or other details of the Wii U launch will be discussed at this year's E3.
