Comic-Con: Behold - The Jar Jar in Carbonite Action Figure!

Tomorrow morning I leave for Comic-Con and I'm currently swamped with last minute prep - but I felt I had to post something about the awesome Hasbro Star Wars Comic-Con exclusive that arrived yesterday.

The hexagon-shaped box features a new action figure from each film in the series, in a box meant to evoke the famous carbon freezing chamber from The Empire Strikes Back. The action figure cards are a fun "What If?" choice, based on a design Kenner considered but didn't go with back in the day, using the alternate Star Wars logo seen on other merchandise at time. The selection of characters is something of a hodgepodge: Jar Jar Binks for Phantom Menace, a Clone Trooper Lieutenant for Attack of the Clones, a Shock Trooper for Revenge of the Sith, a Sandtrooper for A New Hope, Princess Leia (in her Bespin outfit) for The Empire Strikes Back and Darth Vader (looking all, "Oh crap, I just got Force Lightninged") for Return of the Jedi. There's a bit of a theme with the three generations of Stormtroopers, but the other three don't really match.

Overall though, this is a great followup to last year's SDCC exclusive, which had another "Could have been" bit of packaging, with the Revenge of the Sith carded figures inside a Death Star-shaped case.

But the most fun draw for the carbonite freezer set is the hidden seventh figure it comes with. Which is revealed by opening a panel on the top of the box, by pulling out the Phantom Menace title piece...

Wait for it...

And it's...

That's right, it's a Jar Jar in Carbonite action figure! Oh, glorious day.

This very special and amusing Star Wars set is available at San Diego Comic-Con at the Hasbro booth. Suffice to say, expect some serious lines.

Comic-Con: Explosive New Expendables 2 Poster

Lionsgate has released an Expendables 2 retro poster for Comic-Con this week, featuring Stallone, Statham and the rest of the gang firing guns and blowing sh*t up in over-the-top '80s fashion.

The bulk of the cast will be appearing at the convention itself, with one of the yet-to-be-announced stars being welcomed into the IGN Action Hero Hall of Fame.

The Expendables 2 hits screens globally throughout August, with the synopsis as follows:

The Expendables are back and this time it's personal... Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) -- with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Nan Yu) aboard -- are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time -- six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that's nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way....

Daredevil Faces the End of Days

Remember Daredevil: End of Days? This mini-series was announced way back at the second New York Comic-Con in February 2007. It promised to chronicle Matt Murdock's last adventure and feature an all-star cast of Daredevil creators, including writers Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack, penciller Klaus Janson, and inker Bill Sienkiewicz. Unfortunately, the project has seen numerous delays over the years as the creators worked to balance their various commitments with this demanding assignment.

Luckily, there's a light at the end of the tunnel for Daredevil fans. Today Marvel held a Next Big Thing press call to announce that End of Days #1 will be shipping in October 2012. Bendis, Mack, Janson, Sienkiewicz, and editor Tom Brennan were all present on the call to shed more light on this elusive book.

Daredevil: End of Days #1 (Alex Maleev cover)

Janson talked about the genesis of the project. "We wanted to get a lot of the people who were associated with Daredevil through the years together on this book and make it the culmination of action for the character. What's interesting about the story is, not only do we have this incredible lineup of talent on the book, but we see almost everyone who's ever been associated with the character through the years. A lot of characters pop up in this story which, to me, is just an absolute pleasure to draw and a pleasure to read."

Bendis explained the setting of the series, saying "It takes place in the not-too-distant future [later revealed to be about 10 years forward]. We get to see a glimpse of what the Marvel Universe very well may turn out like if everything goes to hell. Not in a dystopian, Mad Max-type of way. More in the vein of Daredevil -- a more realistic way. Very specifically, how the world of Daredevil has changed and what has happened." Bendis revealed that Daredevil is murdered in the first issue, "which sends Ben Urich on his very last assignment."

The creators downplayed the idea that End of Days will be a murder mystery, as the identity of Murdock's killer will be apparent from the start. The focus will be more on the reasons for his death and Urich's investigation. Bendis said, "As he unravels exactly what Matt Murdock's death meant, he'll unravel a lot of secrets about Matt and the world of Daredevil he never knew before. His life and the life of everyone in Matt's world is in danger. So a little, tiny nod to Citizen Kane and a huge, huge nod to all of the people who have worked on Daredevil with us and before us." Bendis also remarked that the story will offer commentary on the state of modern journalism and media, not unlike Aaron Sorkin's new series Newsroom.

Daredevil: End of Days #1 (David Mack cover)

Fans can expect to see a number of familiar faces in the story. Aside from villains like Bullseye and Kingpin, Elektra will make an appearance as "a violent soccer mom," a fact which Bendis noted should appeal particularly to long-term readers. Janson, meanwhile, joked about her trading in her traditional sais for a soccer ball. Nick Fury and The Punisher will also appear in the story, along with various other unnamed Marvel characters outside the immediate Daredevil family.

Readers can expect a much darker Daredevil book than the one currently being penned by Mark Waid. "Our book is dark and violent and shocking to those who are used to our runs on Daredevil," Bendis said. "For those who are used to Daredevil right now, I think it's going to be doubly shocking." Mack elaborated, "Even though it exists in the ambiguous near future, it almost has this old style New York grit to it. It feels like anything can happen, like the '70s films." The creators brought up the crime films of Martin Scorsese as a comparison.

As if the murder of Matt Murdock didn't make this obvious, the creators are very much treating End of Days as Daredevil's final adventure. Janson said, "I’m taking this as the last Daredevil story. I'm approaching that way and I'm putting everything I can into it." Sienkiewicz downplayed the need to reflect recent Marvel continuity, saying, "The way the future is being portrayed -- it's entirely of a piece. The city is its own character as well and everything about it has the Daredevil stamp all through it. It's very much its own thing and of its own world."

Finally, Brennan teased the quality of the project. "Every level of the book, from writing to penciling to inking and even lettering -- you'll see a bunch of masters at their craft. I suspect that, if you're an aspiring comic book writer or artist, they're going to be pointing to this series for years to come as an example of comics done right."

Man of Steel Plot Details Revealed

With Comic-Con fast approaching, director Zack Snyder will no doubt have plenty of Man of Steel goodness to showcase in San Diego. Until then, Warner Bros.' Superman reboot has been held under lock and key, with only a logo and the promotional image below to whet our appetites.

MOS-0001RV_1312466738

However, /Film reports that an update to the official IMAX website -- a posting which has already been removed -- has revealed two very important bits of information: one, the film will be in both 3D and IMAX (obviously); and two, we've also been given a new plot synopsis:

"In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question ‘Why am I here?’ Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope -- Superman."

Still a little vague, yes, but it does give us a general sense of what's to come. Also, since Man of Steel was not shot using IMAX cameras; the movie will be DMR up-converted for the final release.

Man of Steel is scheduled to hit theaters on June 14, 2013.

Dredd Sequel Could be Origin Story

With the Dredd press tour ramping up in preparation for San Diego Comic-Con, the film’s star Karl Urban and screenwriter Alex Garland appeared at the London Film and Comic Con this past weekend to talk about the movie.

And amongst the many things they discussed was the potential for Judge Dredd sequels, with Bleeding Cool reporting Garland as saying the following...

“We’ll see a sequel if the gross is above $50m in the US. It’s a simple financial equation. We’re an independent movie.”

And in terms of what those sequels might revolve around, Garland explained that the Dark Judges could make an appearance…

“I wrote death into this script, but it didn’t feel right for the first film. I thought it felt right but after about 16 drafts it really didn’t work out. I needed to have set up the city and Dredd first before taking on what is essentially a riff on the Judges. You need to know what the Judges are before you can subvert them.

“I wrote a second script which was about Dredd going out to the Cursed Earth. That was rejected for similar reasons.

“If they want to make sequels, I’ve got a story that goes from this one into the origins of Dredd and the city. Then the third one would have a strange, existential attack from the Dark Judges.”

So 2,000AD fans, is this the way you’d like to see the Judge Dredd story progress?

Marvel Universe to Undergo Drastic Changes

Fans have long been speculating about Marvel's plans for their post-Avengers vs. X-Men universe. Thanks to an announcement in the Comic-Con issue of EW, we've got the answers.

Marvel NOW! is the company's latest publishing initiative, the next phase of Marvel ReEvolution, a concept that was unveiled earlier this year. Basically, it's a giant shake-up of Marvel's entire universe -- brand new titles, brand new creative teams, brand new costumes, relaunched titles, new digital incentives, new cover designs and even new secret identities, in some cases. It's a complete overhaul for the Marvel Universe that the publisher promises will leave no major character or series unaffected (jury's still out on where Night Nurse ends up, though).

However, Marvel has made sure to make one thing clear: Marvel NOW! is not a reboot or restart of continuity. This is the next evolution of their characters in a post-AvX world that will be moving things in all-new directions with creators tackling characters they've never really touched before.

Marvel will begin launching new books starting in October, which will included new and long-forgotten titles but also a few re-launches. The new books will continue launching through February 2013. If you're not sold on the idea yet, just take a look at the titles announced so far:

Uncanny Avengers #1 by Rick Remender & John Cassaday (October)

  • The book stars a team comprised of both Avengers and X-Men (yes, including Captain America and Wolverine) on a mission to find the Red Skull, who's on a mission to eliminate mutants once and for all.

All New X-Men #1 by Brian Michael Bendis & Stuart Immonen (November)

  • The original five X-Men -- from the 60s -- show up in the present and realize that the future they see isn't the one that they want. Bendis made it clear that it wasn't a time travel story that was heavy on the sci-fi element, instead focused on the character drama this situation would create.

Avengers #1 by Jonathan Hickman & Jerome Opena (December)

  • Described as an Avengers book for the 21st century, Hickman will expand the roster to "18 or more" members from all walks of the Marvel Universe. Given the style of writing Hickman goes for, expect this book to be huge in scope.

Not bad, eh? Of course, this answers the mystery of what Hickman would be doing after he wraps up his Fantastic Four run and the reason he left Ultimate Comics Ultimates some months back, where he stated that it was for an opportunity that he couldn't pass up. If that opportunity wasn't Avengers #1, I'm not sure what else it could have been. In addition, this answers the question of what Bendis is doing post-Avengers. It's also worth noting that the rumors about Jean Grey's return are likely in reference to All-New X-Men, which states that the original First Class -- of which Jean was a part -- would find themselves in the present.

Uncanny Avengers by Remender and Cassaday is certainly an interesting title, as it suggests a mash-up of the writer's two major titles -- Uncanny X-Force and Secret Avengers. Might the teams be merging? Whatever the case, these line-ups are thrilling and here's hoping whatever else Marvel's got in store for Marvel NOW! is on par with these books.

EW also debuted an exclusive piece of art showcasing some of the new costume changes. All I can really say about it is, Rocket Raccoon FTW:

Aside from the new titles and general newness to the visual look of some characters, Marvel is also continuing their renewed focus on digital comics. The Marvel NOW! branding represents a jump-on point for new readers, and the covers for every new #1 with the branding will make use of Marvel AR to recap the story so far for new readers before they even open the book. Additionally, each book with the Marvel NOW! branding will have a code to download a free digital copy of the purchased issue via the Marvel Comics app.

There's bound to be plenty of speculation from fans in the coming weeks; luckily, San Diego Comic-Con is right around the corner. Surely attendees will have some questions. In the meantime, stay tuned to IGN Comics for a chat with Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada on Thursday to shed some light on the initiative.

Update: In addition to the series listed above, Marvel revealed another new title: New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting. This will relaunch as a #1 in January.

Frankie Boyle Slates Iron Man at Kapow!

IGN's Kapow! Comic Con adventures continued with a light-hearted Q&A with Frankie Boyle, hosted by Jimmy Carr, in which they chatted all things Hulk, Iron Man and The Walking Dead.

Frankie Boyle is adding to the long line of Scottish comic book writers with his supervillain ('Earth's antibody') for CLiNT magazine, and he's a self-confessed comic book geek. With the help of his mate Jimmy Carr, Boyle talked us through his influences, what he loves about comic books and why he Iron Man.

"When I was about nine years old I got into this comic book called about this blonde kid who, like everyone in comics, had two roles - he was a footballer and he was a champion sheepdog trialist as a sideline," says Boyle. "The stories were all f*cking horrible - 'Hitler Lives' or 'Limp-Along Leslie'. There was also a comic I read called about a formula one driver who was also a stunt driver, and who wanted to die in each issue 'cause he was disfigured so he would sabotage the races."

Boyle went on to say that ‘80s British comics appealed to him because they were "still slightly outside the mainstream eye - stuff that you would never get now in the TV or movie versions."

Although Frankie didn't get into American comics until his 20s, he developed a passion for Vertigo titles such as , and (a particular favourite of his) from fellow Scotsman Grant Morrison, whom he clearly admires. "I always wanted to do comics, I f*cking love comics. You'd have to write a bad comic for me not to read it. In fact, even if it was sh*t I'd probably still read it."

When asked who his favourite comic book characters are Boyle launched into a story of his childhood in Glasgow: "I once dressed up as The Hulk as a kid, but I used water based paints to make myself green so kept applying layer on layer on layer - I ended up looking like a green scab." On the flipside, he was very passionate about the character he most dislikes in the comic book world: "Iron Man is basically a f*cking arms dealer, he blows people up...I'd fly Iron Man right into the f*cking sun!"

As for what he's currently into he tells us "I'm reading and .I read but it's so f*cking bleak I almost gave up." Clearly passionate about this subject Boyle said that he really believes that "there are so many great comics out there - this could be coming into the best time for comics...we're now at the point where everyone knows all the characters and archetypes, and can put their own twist on it." Let the golden age begin!

The Amazing Spider-man Looks... Amazing

IGN saw exclusive preview of footage from one of this summer's most anticipated blockbusters, The Amazing Spider-Man, at Kapow Comic-con in London.

Sony Entertainment introduced the sneak peek at the new Spider-Man movie as an exclusive look at 'some of the best 3D' it had ever seen, and they weren't far wrong judging by the four minutes we saw. The action takes pace in sewers, across skylines and is focused heavily around a bridge.

But there is also plenty of humour to back up the action. A cute scene involves Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and Peter Parker's (Andrew Garfield) encounter by the school lockers, set to a Coldplay soundtrack, in which he flirts with her with excruciating shyness. The love interest arc should be convincing as this is from the director that brought us the 'anti-rom-com' 500 Days of Summer - the aptly named Marc Webb. But the best humour comes from Spidey's sheer delight at his new found powers as he takes on a tooled-up thief - "oh no - is that a knife? Please say that isn't a knife!" - pulling some nifty moves with his web-shooters as he 'snots' out webbing, mimes some baseball pitching moves and then adds some cowboy finesse to his arsenal.

Rhys Ifans looks politely menacing as Dr Curt Connors who, when given Parker's scientific formula turns himself into The Lizard: "I created him!" says Peter to a distraught Gwen who pleads with him not to leave her. The Lizard, although big and stocky compared to the lithe Spider-man, can still chase our hero across a ceiling or two.

By all accounts 2012's Spider-man is very promising, and with sharp writing, a hugely talented lead (we'd take Garfield over Maguire any day), top notch 3D, and a convincing romance, this is definitely a summer blockbuster you will want to 'catch'.

DC: The New 52 - "We're Committed To You, The Fans."

DC’s Dan DiDio took to the stage at Kapow! Comic Con to personally thank the British fans for helping to make The New 52 a success, and to pledge the company’s commitment to producing the best possible comics for the foreseeable future.

“With The New 52, we hope that we’re meeting our obligation to you as creators, because keeping you happy is our job. Without you none of this would be possible,” DC’s co-publisher explained to the packed auditorium, “We wanted to come over personally and thank you, because you represent about 10-15% of our business!”

Scott Snyder, the creative genius behind The New 52’s Batman arc The Court of Owls was also on hand to discuss the upcoming finale to the current run. “The next two issues really are our big finale, the big revelations of the whole series begin to come out, and then issue 11 is our giant climax,” Scott told the fans, “I’m really excited about it, I can’t wait. I’ve never worked this hard ever in my life!”

Snyder also revealed the return of Arcane in his Swamp Thing run, “I wanted to explore the core of Arcane. I wanted the ask the questions ‘Who is he? What makes his scary, and why?’ This story will not just reintroduce Arcane, but it will begin the events that lead to the big crossover I’m working on with Jeff Lemire on with Animal Man.”

Issues 12 of Animal Man and Swamp Thing will share a cover, revealed at the show, with the Arcane story dovetailing into the crossover story that Snyder described as “Incredibly epic.”

Dan DiDio wrapped up the panel with a heartfelt tribute to the hardcore DC fans in attendance, “I just want to talk to you about the commitment that we have to our product [The New 52]. We were at a point where people stopped buying our books. Fans were frustrated about the uncertainty around when their favourite books would be out,” DiDio explained, “When we launched the New 52, we made a huge commitment to delivering the books to you, on time. We’re very happy to say that in the last 12 months, out of 52 books a month, we’ve only shipped two issues one week late."

"You want the books on the shelves when you expect them, and we understand that. We took our fans for granted before, but that’s something we’ll never do again. We’re committed to our product, our books, and to you, the fans."

Kapow! DC: All Access Before Watchmen Panel

A panel of DC executives admitted they are suffering from anxiety in the run up to the launch of Before Watchmen at a DC All Access panel at Kapow! Comic Con in London today.

“To say we’re excited would be an understatement,” admitted Senior VP of Sales at DC Entertainment Bob Wayne, “But, to say we’re nervous would also be an understatement! I think we can let the product speak for itself, and hopefully everybody will enjoy what we’ve got.”

“We went to a lot of trouble to assemble the talent, to make sure we had the right people working on it,” explained Dan DiDidio co-publisher of DC, “Honestly, I can say this for every one of the creatives involved, that they’re doing some of the best work of their careers. They know how important this project is, and they know how much scrutiny it’s going to come under.” before-watchmenjpg

They revealed several variant covers at the panel at the London Business Design Centre including an awesome S&M inspired Ozymandias cover, and a psychedelic Josh Middleton variant for Silk Spectre, the Before Watchmen arc that both DiDio and Wayne were very enthusiastic about.  “Silk Spectre is my personal favourite,” said Dan, “Darwyn Cooke is working with Amanda Conner on this one, and he really wanted to capture the spirit of Silk Spectre in a specific period of time. Darwyn wrote the basic plot and Amanda ran with it from there.”

“This is one of the quietest of the stories, but also one of the most heartfelt. It’s a coming of age story, with Silk Spectre discovering herself, and separating herself from her mother.”

The Rorschach series is fittingly being described as “the most violent series” of Before Watchmen with Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo recreating Time Square of the 1970s for the very first issue of the arc. “It’s pretty intense,” stressed DiDio, “as someone who lived in New York in that era, it’s as gritty as I remember.”

The panel went on to discuss the Curse of the Corsair, the pirate-themed companion piece that will preface each issue of the book run, promising 34 different cliff-hangers for each issue. “It captures the style and tone and the shifts in nature of the stories that are taking part in the main features. We hope it recreates that same feel that Tales of the Black Freighter did in conjuction with the original Watchmen.” said Wayne. “It’s a swashbuckling adventure that just gets darker and darker as the series goes on,” added DiDio.

The panel were keen to deflect questions about Alan Moore's much-publicised negativity towards the project at the start of the Q&A session, but were candid when it came to discussing how much freedom they had given all the creatives when it came to crafting a new backstory for the series.

“When we sat down with all the writers, everyone was very beholding to the source material. They all had a copy of Watchmen in front of them that was operating as their ‘bible’ for the creative process,” DiDio said, “But, the first thing we said everybody should be able to be their own story-teller. Everybody has a lot of freedom in how they approach the material, how the writing is, how the drawing will look, and they all approached it very differently.”

Editor Will Dennis reiterated, “We always said from very early on, we want to let these guys do what they do best. You don’t hire these guys to do what they do so well and make them do something else.”

You’ll be able to find out how successful they’ve been in bringing the classic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons series back to life when the first issue drops in June. Be sure to check out our first impressions of Before Watchmen here.
