E3 2012: Hokra hands-on

Hokra Image

One of the first games I had the chance to play at this year's E3 was a lovely little indie title called Hokra. The game, which was being shown off at the IndieCade booth, can best be described as a minimalist sports title. And as was very appropriately pointed out by GameZone's own Lance Liebl, Hokra almost has a very slight shooter element to it, as well. Hokra is a game for four players. Participants are divided into teams of two, and their goal is to take a ball — or pixel — and score it into their respective goals. Each team has two goals, and they are color-coded to match the players' sprites. Hokra's visual design is made up entirely of pixels, so it has a completely non-threatening and entirely calm aesthetic to it. The game really looks great, and the minimalist art style creates one big abstract sports game. The sound is also very simple, and composer Nathan Tompkins was quick to point out that he didn't want to create a chiptune-heavy soundtrack because the game wasn't really a traditional 8-bit title.

A match in Hokra is won by the team that manages to fill its goals' pixels. Running to the goal with the ball or "kicking" it into it helps fill in the large collection of pixels. Controls are simple, and given Hokra's design, I really wouldn't have it any other way. You move around the screen using the analog stick, and if you have the ball in your possession, you can pass it to your partner or attempt to score by pressing the A button on the Xbox 360 controller. If you're not in possession of the ball, you can sprint by tapping the A button. What this essentially means is that if you've got the ball, you'll move slower than your opponents. As defense, you have the opportunity to steal the ball from whoever has it. Successfully stealing the ball can be a lot deeper than you might initially think. Case in point: You can sprint toward the person with the ball by tapping A and succeed in taking it for yourself, but as soon as you do, you'll need to stop pressing A, because you'll end up kicking the ball away. Hokra poses a wonderful little system that takes some technique and finesse to master, but it's incredibly rewarding and just plain fun.

As much fun as the gameplay may be, the social aspect of Hokra is also a total blast. I was playing alongside fellow GameZone writer Vito Gesualdi, and together we were taking on another duo. These two guys were primed and ready, and they gave us a good fight. That said, my partner and I gave each other a better fight. Shouts of "You suck!" and "Don't steal the ball from me!" were uttered throughout, and they were a hell of a lot more prominent than the typical "Pass it over here!" and "Good shot!" crap you hear in traditional sports games. Hokra is a game where you team up to beat another pair, but you still can't help but point out your partner's stupid mistakes, and the game is awesome because of that.

I'm not going to lie; I had so much fun playing Hokra and talking to developer Ramiro Corbetta that I completely forgot to ask about the game's release info. That said, the fact that I played it using an Xbox 360 controller could indicate a possible PC or Xbox 360 launch down the road. I'll be sure to get the full scoop straight from Corbetta, but until I do, I would like to point out that I had a total blast playing Hokra. The gameplay was ridiculously fun, and the presentation was absolutely pleasant. Now that I'm away from it, I realize that I need more Hokra in my life. Here's hoping I get to play it again very soon.

YES! YES! YES! It's IGN's Interview with WWE's Daniel Bryan!

Daniel Bryan goes head to head with CM Punk for the WWE Championship at this Sunday’s Over the Limit Pay-Per-View. I had a chance to talk to the WWE Superstar, and former World Heavyweight Champion, about his “Big Gold Belt” title reign, his upcoming match with Punk, what Vince McMahon thinks of him being a vegan, his storyline with AJ and more.

IGN: The last time I spoke with you, you hadn’t even cashed in your Money in the Bank case yet to win the World Heavyweight Title.  What have the past six months been like for you professionally?

Daniel Bryan:  It’s been crazy.  It’s been a lot of fun.  I went from being a guy who was sparingly being used on television to being the World Heavyweight Champion and the focus of a lot of the storylines on Smackdown.  And now I’m in a big match for the WWE Championship on a Pay-Per-View and it’s unreal.

IGN:  Those of us who anticipated you becoming a World Champion in the WWE expected you to be having matches with guys like CM Punk.  Guys similar to your stature.  Did you ever think that your very first championship feuds would be against guys like Big Show and Mark Henry?

Bryan:  No, I never thought that if I was going to be the champion in the WWE that those would be my first opponents.  My first feuds.  Especially because I also felt like I didn’t match up very well with those guys.  But then it seems to me that both of those feuds went very well.  And I was thrilled to wrestle those guys because it forces me to go outside my usual box.  You know, I could go out there and wrestle CM Punk and have a fantastic match, but that’s along my normal line of thinking.  Wrestling someone like Big Show requires and totally different style.   And for me that was fun.

From WWE.com, the Anaconda Vice vs. The Yes! Lock.

IGN: Will we see the “Code of Honor” this Sunday?

Bryan:  I suspect not.  It’s interesting because in our first match in the WWE against each other, on Monday Night RAW – it was a Champion vs. Champion match – and we did it.  We shook hands before the match.  And for some reason, I don’t think that’s going to happen on Sunday.

IGN: Are you yourself surprised, given your indie history and legacy, that you’re now a part of a major high-profile relationship storyline with AJ?

Bryan:  [laughs] Definitely.  And you know what’s funny is that I feel like – not since I started with WWE, but since I got fired and then brought back - they had this storyline with me and the Bellas.  Then it was me and Gail Kim.  And now it’s me and AJ.  It seems like I’m always in these stories with these Divas.  And I don’t know what the deal is.  Maybe they just see me as someone who’d be funny to pair up with them.  Like “Yeah, it would be funny to put him with the Divas.”   But I really have no idea.

IGN:  It seems though, that in your story AJ, you’ve been able to move past that nerd-persona that they gave you.  Would you agree?

Bryan:  Yeah, I do.  But I think the origin of me and AJ was part of the whole nerd persona.  The idea that we were both nerds.  Because it started before I was the World Heavyweight Champion and they just started throwing these little thing at me and her backstage and we were supposed to be really awkward.  So the idea still started with “Oh, he’s a nerd.”  But now it’s evolved into something that’s way better.

Daniel Bryan, playing mind games with AJ.

IGN:  How long have you been a vegan?

Bryan:  Since December of 2009.

IGN:  Did you ever think that being a vegan would draw this much heat from large crowds?

Bryan:  No, I didn’t know actually.  And I do it for health reasons, you know.  Not for entertainment reasons or anything else.  So for me it wasn’t even an issue of bringing it up on TV.  Other than “Oh, that’s an interesting fact about this guy.”  And the idea that you can tell people you’re a vegan and get everyone to go “BOOOO!” is crazy.  It’s interesting because the first experience I had with that wasn’t even with the crowd but it was with Vince himself.  And Chris Jericho loves telling me this story about how he had gone back to Vince and said “This guy’s good.”   It was after the first match I had on TV, and it was against Chris, and he told Vince I was good.  “He can get the people behind him,” he said.  And Vince said [in Vince voice] “Yeah, but who doesn’t eat steak?”  He thought people wouldn’t buy into a guy who didn’t eat steak.  And that’s when I kind of realized that there are a lot of people out there who just think it’s completely foreign for me to not eat animals.

More from Daniel Bryan, including the origin of the "YES!" chants, on page 2...

Supernatural: Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki Look Towards Season 8

Just a day before Friday’s Supernatural season finale, I had the chance to speak to both of the show’s stars, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles about what to expect as Season 7 wraps up and the series gets ready for Season 8 in the fall.

Season 8 will find Supernatural going through some big changes, including a move from Friday nights to Wednesdays -where it will be paired with the new series Arrow. There will also be a new showrunner, Jeremy Carver, who previously wrote for the series before departing to launch Being Human a couple of years ago.

About an hour and a half after I spoke to Padalecki and Ackles, I attended a press conference with CW’s president, Mark Pedowitz. While anything can happen in TV, Pedowitz’s remark about Supernatural – “I’m not looking at Season 8 as the final year in any way, shape or form” – makes it clear The CW certainly has no specific intention right now of wrapping up the series next season. You’ll see what Padalecki and Ackles told me about their thoughts on going beyond Season 8 below.

IGN TV: So, you’ve got this Dick Roman guy to deal with in the finale...

Jared Padalecki: Yeah, yeah. He’s an ass***e!

IGN: [Laughs] Yes, he is! So what can you tell us about the finale?

Padalecki: True to Supernatural form, we don’t avoid the issue or press it on ad infinitum. We do an episode where we confront him. So you will see the boys, with some help, confronting Dick Roman tomorrow, and we’ll see how it turns out -- some good, some bad. It can’t just be, good guys win, drive away. It never is in Supernatural. We’re certainly going to leave you hanging a little bit. But it’s a very exciting cliffhanger for Season 8.

But we didn’t know. We had a good inkling that we were gonna go to Season 8, so we left it in a sense -- it would be very bad for the show to end tomorrow. So we set it out with a good launch pad for Season 8. Once again, true to Supernatural form, we’re not just gonna, like, “Oh, what’s going on now?” One of the brothers is left in a pretty sticky situation. So I hope that Season 8 can start where Season 7 left off. We had a few opportunities in Supernatural where we could start where we left off. And sometimes, I think there were a few seasons were like, Sam’s been hunting with the family, or Dean’s been alive for however long. So I’d like to pick up where we left off. And I’d like to see the brothers do their own thing for a little bit. I love the brothers together -- I think it’s a great dynamic, and I’m great friends with Jensen. I know how we act, and it’s easy to work together. But I love when the characters get to go out on their own and do their own thing.

IGN: You got Bobby back, but again, true to the show, there was a price. He’s not doing so hot.

Padalecki: Yeah, he’s not doing so well. But we don’t want Bobby’s character to be cheapened, either by killing him and bringing him back, killing him and bringing him back, killing him and bringing him back - nor by letting his character literally deteriorate into this ghost he is. So we also have some stuff to deal with tomorrow.

supernatural-20120517093529605

IGN: Your character went through a lot of mental angst for a couple of years on the show.

Padalecki: Yeah, they’re killin’ me!

IGN: Are you happy to be in a better place with him, or is it fun to play the screwed up version of Sam?

Padalecki: Both, I guess! The new dad in me is happy to not have the angst-y character, because it has to go with you a little bit. When you’re 12 or 14 hours a day of playing this messed up character, you go home and have a glass of wine to get it out of you. So the new father in me is happy that Sam’s a little more balanced right now. But Sam will always have a couple screws loose. He’s had too much going on in his life to just be a perfectly balanced human being. So he’ll always be a little angst-y.

IGN: I love Mark Pellegrino’s Lucifer. Do you think the writers will continue to figure out some ways to use him?

Padalecki: Yeah, he’s awesome. I hope so, because I like him a lot -- also, as a person. And he’s a great character. He brings a great dynamic to the show. So I hope we get a chance to bring him back. I learned a long time ago to try and not figure out what the writers are going to do because I’m always wrong. So I’m not gonna throw a wild guess out there, but I hope he does come back.

IGN: When are you guys thinking this show might hit an ending? Do you think Season 8 might be the final one?

Padalecki: I haven’t heard any inkling of it. There’s no news that this is the last year. We feel like Supernatural can go as long as our fans are excited. We have a new showrunner now too, and Jeremy is a fantastic writer, a great mind. I can’t wait to see where he takes the show. And I’m imagining if he just came on, he probably has more than 23 episodes in his head. So hopefully they’ll keep us around. I mean, we’re having a great time doing it. Eight years of my adult life have been spent in Vancouver as Sam Winchester, so why not make it nine or ten?

Continue to Page 2 to see what Jensen Ackles had to say about the end of Supernatural: Season 7 and his thoughts on Season 8.

Elder Scrolls Online confirmed for 2013

Skyrim fans yearning to explore the game's fantasy world with other people will get the chance next year, as Bethesda Softworks today announced The Elder Scrolls Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game take on the long-running series, set for release in 2013.

Bethesda didn't reveal any gameplay details, but a Game Informer tease for the magazine's cover story on Elder Scrolls Online revealed that the game will be cover the entire continent of Tamriel, including the lands featured in previous Elder Scrolls games like Cyrodiil, Skyrim, and Morrowind. The game will be set 1,000 years before the events of last year's hit Skyrim, and put the players into the world on the brink of demonic assimilation at the hands of the daedric prince Molag Bal.

Elder Scrolls Online will also feature three player factions, though they were not detailed. However, a rumor that made the rounds in March and correctly predicted the game's announcement suggested that they will be represented by animals: a lion, a dragon, and an unspecified bird of prey.

The Elder Scrolls Online will be the debut game from Zenimax Online Studios, which was established five years ago with Mythic Entertainment cofounder Matt Firor (Dark Age of Camelot) heading up the operation. Firor is also serving as game director on the project.
