Jason Ciaramella’s The Cape mini-series had a solid sense of finality at its end, so naturally for a follow up he takes us back to 1969 to witness the origin of the super powered object. The new main character is Captain Chase, father to Eric and Nicky, who we meet during his time as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. While this issue does a great job of establishing the characters and setting, it goes a tad too light on the reason anyone would pick it up in the first place; there’s not more than the slightest hint about the actual origin of the cape.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a well told story that engages the reader on multiple levels. The instantly likable cast and their violent plunge into a warzone is enough to hook anyone. If this were just a straight war comic it would earn a lot of praise, but its true purpose is to expose the truths behind the cape. With that in mind, this comic doesn’t quite hit the mark. There’s a single page that lets me know that this is indeed about the cape’s origin, but other than that it felt like I was watching Apocalypse Now.
Nelson Daniel’s artwork helps create the hard, realistic tone of the book. He has such skill at sequential art that his pages feel more like a movie than a comic. The opening scene hits just the right amount of humor before the violence and mayhem take over. He shows men getting killed in the worst ways without overdoing it. It’s just enough to have you grimace while touching your face, thankful that it’s not half burnt off.
