This past weekend IGN headed to Cannes to catch up with the ludicrously gorgeous Bérénice Marlohe - one of the stars of new James Bond movie Skyfall - as she presented an exclusive look at the new teaser trailer. While neither she nor the trailer gives much away about her “enigmatic” character Séverine, Marlohe still had some interesting things to say about the new trailer, James Bond at 50, her favourite Bond movie – and, er, her favourite Bond girl’s orgasms…
IGN: How does it feel to present the new Skyfall trailer here at Cannes?
Bérénice Marlohe: As a half-French person, I’m really proud to present this in Cannes. You really feel a big, strong attraction to movies here, so that’s really nice.
IGN: What’s your first impression of the new trailer?
BM: I was impressed and really moved. I’m doing editing with video and I’m a musician too and I was surprised with the way they arranged that with the music, it’s very subtle but modern and intriguing too. It doesn’t give away anything but then you want to see the whole film. I was truly amazed as an artist myself at what they have done, it’s very beautiful.
IGN: We don’t see too much of you in the trailer, is that a good or bad thing?
BM: It’s better. For the surprise..!
IGN: Is there anything more you can say about your character Séverine, other than what we’ve heard a lot, which is that she’s “enigmatic”?
BM: Well, I really wanted to create her so that she would not be too obvious as a “bad Bond girl” or a “good Bond girl”, as Daniel did for James Bond: he put it some vulnerability but also he’s very strong and tough; like a killing machine but also very human too. And this is what’s interesting because then you have something charismatic to see onscreen. And I really wanted to play in different colours while creating her so that the audience will have something interesting to see. You can’t put Séverine in an obvious [box].
IGN: What can audiences expect from Skyfall?
BM: All the key ingredients that have made this franchise last for 50 years, action, a sense of humour, the characters very high in colour from the villain to James Bond, but with a kind of real modernity you see reflected in the trailer. There’s a fantastic cast and fantastic director and the script is really striking. They really can expect one of the best if not the best Bonds ever. I really think they will enjoy it.
IGN: What does Daniel Craig bring to James Bond and what’s he like to work with?
BM: He’s a wonderful guy, very serious while working but at the same time he has a great sense of humour and a beautiful humanity so it’s been a pleasure to interact with him.
But they’re all so great. I really understand what they mean when they talk about the “Bond family”. Everyone was so kind and professional and it will be something I will never forget.
IGN: How did you get involved with the film, through the usual agent/audition channels?
BM: No, I actually didn’t have an agent in France! When I heard about the casting, which was also taking place in Paris, I really wanted to get a chance for my work to be seen. So I tried to find the names of the people involved and send them my reel. And I found the casting director Debbie McWilliams’ email and I sent her my reel and it all started like that. I did the first audition with her; the second with Sam Mendes at Pinewood Studios; and the third with Daniel, Sam and the producers.
IGN: How did you work out for the role?
BM: Well regarding the action side, I asked to be trained to fire guns because I really thought it would really help me feed the character in the direction I wanted her to be. And otherwise I have a lot of interaction with dialogue, so it was more working specifically on the script.
IGN: What’s your favourite James Bond movie and why?
BM: I really enjoyed because suddenly something changed with this modernity and with Daniel bringing life to James Bond in a very new way. And there are some wonderful scenes, like when they play poker and he orders his beverage and everybody’s answering, the guys… it’s very subtle and has a British sense of humour and I like that.
IGN: And your favourite Bond girl?
BM: I really love Famke Janssen in . I admire actors who are bold and try to go forward over the cliché and propose something original to the audience. And she was killing people and having orgasms! I enjoyed her performance very much.
IGN: “Bond girl” sometimes has a negative connotation – how do you feel about that tag?
BM: No, because honestly I don’t feel like a “Bond girl”, I feel like I created a unique character in a unique movie actually. “Bond girl” is a bit abstract, what does that mean, you see a girl in a bikini? So I wanted to get away from that and working on creating my own character and telling this story.
IGN: So no bikini?
BM: Hmm, you’ll see…!
will be released on October 26th 2012 in the UK and November worldwide.
