38 Studios has revealed footage from upcoming MMO Project Copernicus as it struggles to avoid closure.
The company is facing continuing financial problems following the lacklustre launch of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
The studio was due to repay a $1million loan to the Federal Government but struggled to find funds due to Reckoning being a "flop" and "not successful", according to Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee.
Joystiq reports that the company has been taking extreme measures including laying off staff and stalling pay in order to try and stay open, and that this has so far been successful. Despite this second chance however, another round of payment is due later in the year and studio execs Jennifer MacLean and John Blakely have left the studio, so the company isn't out of the woods yet.
The purpose of the leaked shots seems to be to drum up support for the Rhode Island-based studio in its hour of need. They were posted by new 38watch member AlynShir, named after a character in console game Reckoning, and were accompanied by the words, "38 isn't dead yet. Amalur is worth fighting for. Spread the fire."
The images of the game, which is an online sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, appeared over on Amular fansite 38watch and show characters and environments that seem to have a cartoony aesthetic similar to World of Warcraft. They come just a week after an official video was released, showing the world for the very first time.
At a press conference last week it was suggested that Project Copernicus will release in June 2013, though Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee did add, "whether this is realistic or not is up for debate."
