Sony has announced plans to acquire cloud gaming service Gaikai for $380 million. According to Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House, Sony will establish a new cloud service that will allow users “to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices."
A deal between Sony and Gaikai was heavily rumored leading up to E3, with sources suggesting that Sony was prepping a major upgrade to its cloud gaming support. More recently, reports revealed that Gaikai was seeking $500 million to sell the company.
Specific details about how Sony will implement Gaikai’s cloud services haven’t been revealed, but Gaikai CEO David Perry noted that Sony seeks to “harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide."
While the deal has been formally announced, Sony notes that the transaction will still need to undergo “certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions” before being finalized.
