The Big Bang Theory: Season Finale Review

Note: Full spoilers of this episode to follow.

I always love a good framing device, and tonight's episode of The Big Bang Theory featured a pretty awesome one involving Wolowitz reflecting – just moments before blasting off into space – on his wedding with Bernadette, and the events that lead to their decision to quickly elope.

Not only did this framing device set the episode apart from the rest of the season, but it killed two birds with one stone, allowing fans to see both events without stretching things to two untidy episodes. And, despite having both the space launch story and the wedding in one episode, the framing device allowed us a taste of the hell Wolowtiz will likely endure in space, while enjoying the more character-centric, and touching, aspects of this season-long arch.

Also, since wedding episodes are pretty common for season finales, the launch subplot added a flavor to the narrative that freshened things up. In fact, pretty much every aspect of the wedding felt fresh, right down to Sheldon's Klingon officiation.

In many ways, "
The Countdown Reflection" represents what many fans have longed for all season – a better balance of geeky jokes, relationship humor, character and Sheldonisms. Pretty much everyone hit their marks tonight (
Sheldon was on fire, by the way), and yes, this includes
Amy Farrah Fowler, who got at least three solid laughs out of me.

The episode also hosted a decent share of touching moments, starting with the first scene between Wolowitz and Bernadette, where he gives her a little star pendent he plans to take into space, so he can bring her home a star (awww). It was an honest moment that felt both real and cute, and was followed by a pretty solid laugh. And the final scene, between all the couples, was also honest and sweet, and a pretty great payoff to the previous episode.

As is sometimes the case with The Big Bang Theory, this season in particular, the characters are pretty clumsily written and half-cocked. But a great many of the issues did manage to get cleared up here, paving the way for a sharper, potentially funnier sixth season...hopefully.

Sheldon and Amy's relationship will finally move forward, likely in some rather hilarious and awkward ways.
Leonard and
Penny deepened their feeling for one another. Wolowtiz and Bernadette, now married, must now mutually endure Wolowtiz's overbearing mother, or purge her from their lives. And
Raj, well...he seems to have finally come to terms with being a bachelor.

Let's hope the kinks of this season won't rear its ugly head next fall, and tonight is just a twinkling of things to come. I will leave you with my favorite line of the episode that, in spite of my optimism and love for the show, seems somewhat fitting,"That's what you said about the Green Lantern movie. You were 114 minutes of wrong."

Tron: Uprising/Once Upon a Time Producers' Live Chat

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz were writers on Lost for all six seasons, and since that acclaimed series ended, they've kept plenty busy. This past year, the writing duo launched Once Upon a Time on ABC, one of the season's biggest new hits. On top of that, a new animated series they are consulting producers on, Tron: Uprising, is about to debut on Disney XD – as the two continue to craft tales in the Tron universe, after writing Tron: Legacy.

This past Wednesday, May 9th, Kitsis and Horowitz took part in a special one-hour live Facebook chat, to discuss the upcoming season finale of Once Upon a Time and the premiere of Tron: Uprising. I moderated the discussion, and you can watch highlights below.

Once Upon A Time Live-Stream Highlights:

TRON: Uprising Live-stream Highlights, including the special Microsode debuted during the conversation:

Once Upon a Time presents its season finale, "A Land Without Magic," on Sunday, May 13th at 8pm ET/PT on ABC. Once Upon a Time stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold, Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen/Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David, Eion Bailey as August, Jared Gilmore as Henry Mills and Raphael Sbarge as Jiminy Cricket/Archie Hopper.

Tron: Uprising follows the heroic journey of a new character, a young program named Beck, who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. The series, produced in CG animation with a 2D aesthetic, is set in the era of Tron between the stories in the 1982 feature film and Walt Disney Studios' Tron: Legacy. Disney Channel will present TRON: Uprising - "Beck's Beginning," a 30-minute uninterrupted prelude to the series on Friday, May 18th (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET/PT). The special will encore uninterrupted on Disney XD on Monday, May 21st (7:00-7:30 p.m., ET/PT), followed by the series launch on Thursday, June 7th (9:00-9:30 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD.

Tron: Uprising stars Elijah Wood as Beck, Bruce Boxleitner as Tron, Mandy Moore as Mara, Emmanuelle Chriqui as Paige, Nate Corddry as Zed, Lance Henriksen as General Tesler, Reginald VelJohnson as Able, Paul Reubens as Pavel and Tricia Helfer as the voice of The Grid.

Botanicula Review

Playing Botanicula reminds me of being a child and seeing epic fireworks displays. Despite knowing explosions were coming, and repeatedly thinking I'd seen the coolest setup yet, I still found myself regularly awed. Likewise Botanicula, despite inundating me with cute characters, adorable visuals and delightful music all within the first few moments, never ceased to charm and surprise me right up until the end of the credits. It's an audio and visual journey unlike anything else out there right now – something everyone should play, if for no other reason than to remember what it's like to experience wonderment in a video game again.

Watch a Botanicula Commentary

Botanicula comes by way of
Amanita Design, the team responsible for the indie hit Machinarium. Like its predecessor, it's a point-and-click adventure game. You play as a team of five plants and insectoid characters, taking them through a perilous journey to save their tree from life-sucking parasites. That's all you need to know going in, the rest is best left unknown.

The simple premise betrays the depth of Botanicula. Yes, a large part of the game comes down to clicking around the environment in an effort to find interactive points, and, yes, these tedious parts temporarily detract from the joy of exploring the bizarre environments, but Botanicula has many more smartly designed parts. At no point are you given a tutorial, it's simply up to you to experiment to find out what you're missing. Every action in Botanicula comes down to clicks and cursor movements, but Amanita figures out clever ways to keep you guessing. Sometimes you might have to use your cursor to push objects around the environment, while other times it might be as deceptively simple as clicking and dragging on some part of the world. You never know going in, and Botanicula inspires creativity while daring you to try whatever it is you're thinking, often rewarding you when you do.

Let's be clear: Botanicula maintains a pretty slow pace from start to finish. Puzzles range in challenge, sometimes coming across a bit too obtuse. Other times the solution is so easy it's hardly a puzzle, but instead an excuse for you to click everything until some bizarre action eventually takes place. A great majority of the environmental puzzles you encounter sit right in a happy medium, though, making you feel intelligent for parsing them out.

The aforementioned occasional tedium that comes from pixel hunting in an environment, or the sometimes overly simplistic puzzles, are some of Botanicula's few issues. The only other substantial complaint I had during the six or so hour story was that the video options are incredibly limited. Botanicula's art looks good even at low resolutions, but there's no real way to get it to operate at full screen if you have a larger monitor. Playing with black borders is tolerable, but it'd be nice to see this updated if possible.

The use of colors create quite the spectacle.

It's surprising to say, but, despite being a point-and-click puzzle adventure, these features take a back seat to Botanicula's audio / visual experience. Solving a puzzle gives a little ego boost, and often comes alongside an unpredictable and impressive sensory barrage. One second you could be mindlessly clicking a sphere only to have it burst open, turn into a series of planets, and then have music fill your ears that sells the beauty of the moment. Or perhaps your little troupe of would-be heroes wanders into a den of a great genie, leaving you to experience a taste of each of their greatest fantasies. Just what do the fantasies of anthropomorphic seed, fungus and insect people look like? You have to see it for yourself, because instances like that are what make Botanicula so special.

Prototype 2 Tops April Sales; Overall Gaming Sales Down 32 Percent Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

Prototype 2

Prototype 2 was the top-selling game in April. The supernaturally tinged dystopian action game beat out Kinect Star Wars and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, numbers two and three on the charts, respectively. This is great news if you're a fan of publisher Activision or developer Remedy, but April was not a good month for gaming software as a whole. According to the figures released by industry analysts at the NPD Group, sales were down 32 percent versus last year.

“I think what the new physical retail content sales reflect a very light release schedule in terms of the amount of compelling new games," said the NPD's Anita Frazier in a statement. "Last April, the top seven titles outsold the top-selling title this year, and, simply stated, there were notably fewer new market introductions. I think it’s a simple as that because when we see compelling content come into the market, the games are still selling as well as ever – we just saw a lot less this April as compared to last.”

The Future Starts Today - USC Demo Day Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

The future of gaming graduated this year from USC, the number one game-design school as ranked by USA Today, and I was there this year to take part of their Demo Day activities.

Among the student and their projects, you couldn’t help but run into some of the big names in gaming like EA, Sony, and 2K Games. All of them were looking for their next superstar. With games like flOw and The Misadventure of P.B. Winterbottom coming out of this program, it’s little wonder why everyone is looking to grab the talent coming out of this school.

While you might not have made it for the finger food and cups of coffee, here are some of the big games you need to know about from the USC Demo Day event.

Blink

Not all student games need to look as though those who have never dipped their feet into the professional waters made them. Take Blink for example. From the very first cut scene, you feel as though you’re playing a triple-A title.

As a spy caught by the evil corporation, they try to make you into the perfect warrior by giving you the power to warp over short distances or blink. Even tied down and surrounded by an army of bots, you find a way to escape. (When will evil corporations ever learn?) Now with a new ability and only a knife by your side, you navigate the twisted hallways and training areas as you try to escape.

The blink ability lets you cover distances quickly and attack your opponents before you know what hits them. The bots roaming around change from a pleasant green to a raging red glow when they see you. Blink to them when they’re green and you get in a one-hit kill. Find your next victim and you can warp from place to place, leaving behind a heap of scrap metal in your wake.

Quick, kinetic, and beautiful; Blink proves that the line between student and professional sometimes blurs if not disappears all together. After the students presented their project, the auditorium erupted in applause. Clearly they impressed their peers with this one.

Combiform

Move the purple. Don’t touch the blue.

With every move, the lights in the boxes strapped to our hands changed colors. Magnets on the side snapped the boxes back into a two-by-two grid with every move. Even though the screen kept the score, our eyes were glued to the blocks in our hands as we danced around each other keeping the blues together and moving only the purple. We ended the session with the highest score of the day. But that was only the beginning.

Combiform is more of a platform than a video game though you’ll be using video elements to play many of the games. Each of the four units comes in a self-contained box with lights, a nob, a button, and one sturdy handle underneath for you to hang onto as you pull apart and reassemble each of the units.

From these four units, you can play dozens of games from an electronic form of hot potato to a fighting came where you need to shake and pose in order to fight. Even in such a crowded room, every game of Combiform drew a crowd of spectators watching and laughing at a distance. Part performance and part game, everyone needs to get their hands on these cubes.

Nevermind

Take a trip to the dark side of the looking glass. Nevermind takes you into the minds of patients wrestling with their own demons and disturbing past. Your job is to piece together past memories through pictures collected through the level. Five of the photos will show you the truth while the other five will be lies. By using the clues found in each of the levels, you can figure out what really happened.

As an added twist, a heart monitor keeps track of every scare and disturbing image you come across. As your heart begins to race, the world around you distorts and twits. Sound slows down and the image becomes nearly incomprehensible. You’ll need to catch your breath and calm down if you want to make it through meat lockers of hanging bodies or the twisted rubble of bloody cars. Here is where the game reveals it’s dirty secret – it wants to help you.

By monitoring your stress level, these junior developers hope to teach people how to regulate their stress. Think of it as gaming as therapy. While you see and experience a horror game, you experience low levels of stress that you can manage through calming techniques. With no zombies to shoot or platforms to jump, the students behind this title are looking to get it into the hands of many non-gamers in order to help them in life.

Tales From The Minus Lab

Some people have that crazy uncle that they never talk about. This one has their very own mad scientist. When your bother goes missing after trying to clean up around the lab, you go in after him only to get caught in the same shrink ray as before. Hot on his trail, you’ll need to use your new diminutive size to explore the lab, solve puzzles, and hopefully, get back to something close to normal.

What’s most astounding about this game is that it all takes place in one room. No loading screens. No weird elevator sequence. You move from one section to the next without a pause in the game.

Puzzles take advantage of your changing. Growing in size lets you get to new heights and weigh down object while being small lets you find new areas and ride on a solid updraft. As you gain the power to grow larger and smaller, more puzzles open up for you to explore. Soon, you’ll be larger enough to move sections on the outside only to shrink and manipulate the puzzles from the inside.

Quirky and ingenious, Tales From the Minus Lab displays the kind of fun and ambition you rarely see in even professionally made games.

New Ron Gilbert Game Teased Through Puzzle Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

New Ron Gilbert Game Teased Through Puzzle

Legendary game designer Ron Gilbert and Double Fine productions are working on a game together, but as yet, we have no idea what it is. But there are hints. Such interesting hints.

Today, G4 received an invitation to a see the game at E3 2012, as well as some pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. It took us many, many hours, but we finally put it together to reveal a message: "Join us. See a New Game by Ron Gilbert and Double Fine." Because we're awesome, you can see it above.

So, what does it tell us? The characters look a lot like Ron Gilbert style art, and you'll note a dark purple and black color-scheme. What does it mean? I say: It's a Maniac Mansion sequel. For no reason other than that's what I want. A Maniac Mansion sequel would be like a golden wish riding the shoulders of a happy Cyclops.

We do know Gilbert has been working on something at Double Fine for over a year, and has posted that the game he's working on has at least two playable characters, contains both an old carnival ticket booth and a ceiling mounted laser cannon, and "predates Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island."  Ok... let's say a Maniac Mansion prequel, then.

Gaming Urban Legends - Polybius and the Haunted Pokémon Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

Urban legends are prevalent throughout all mediums of popular culture, with dozens dating back to mysterious happenings on movie sets and subliminal messaging worked into popular musical hits, but the gaming industry has somehow managed to debunk or confirm most of these legends rather quickly.

This doesn’t leave much to be shared in terms of legends or tales, but rest assured, there’s a small number of urban legends surrounding videogames that still have players questioning their validity.

Polybius

The Polybius Initiative

In 1981, a small number of mysterious cabinets started making their way into arcades throughout Portland, Oregon. There wasn’t much that was known about these machines, but they gained popularity at an alarming rate before causing extreme problems and disappearing completely.

The internet wasn’t around much in 1981, which meant that most of the information on arcade cabinets came from newsletters or straight from the cabinet distributor themselves. When Polybius started making its way around the Portland suburbs, there wasn’t too much information on it. It has been said that the gameplay was of a tempest-style but could have possibly had mazes and other puzzles built-in, there’s really no way to confirm either way.

This might not seem like all that unusual of a game, but some believe that the game was meant to test experimental behavior modification through subliminal and undetectable methods. The game was said to have had weird side effects as there were reports of the game causing players to suffer from cases of amnesia, night terrors, terrible nightmares, intense stress, seizures, and suicidal tendencies due to the subliminal messaging. It also introduced extreme addiction which cased problems at arcades due to the machine’s popularity. There were more reported cases of these side effects than usual after playing this game specifically, lending some credibility to the fact that the machine might have been the cause.

As if that wasn’t weird enough, the legend states that men in black suits would come to the arcades every week and dump data off of the machine. This could have been them simply dumping high scores off of the machine, but they came back at such a rate that it seemed like they were gathering large information off of the machine for research, citing the lease agreement as a reason to come check on the machine.

The strange behavior surrounding the game started gaining more attention, but all of the machines disappeared before anything could be done; only a month after they first appeared. It isn’t clear what caused them to move so quickly, perhaps they only needed to gather a month’s worth of data or things were escalating too quickly, whatever it was, they didn’t want it found.

Polybius

There isn’t really any official evidence or documentation of the machine’s existence either, we’re mostly running off of secondhand stories from unconfirmed sources but what those sources independently remember of the game stays consistent throughout.

There was a man who posted on Coinop.org back in 2007, claiming that he was involved with the creation of Polybius, but when he was interviewed at a later time, his story started to fall apart. There were several inconsistencies that didn’t fit with what had been established earlier and it just didn’t make that much sense. He attempted to dispel the rumor, saying that it was a bad version of a game that they had been working on in South America that had been recalled, but again, it didn’t fit with the rest of the story; unless its existence was all being made up in the first place.

While there are collectors out there who claim to have ROMs of Polybius, none have come forward to show any proof or release it to the public. However, in July of 2007, a version of the game and cabinet art made its way online, hosted at www. sinnesloschen.com, which is actually significant, but was most likely a fan site rather than anything connecting to the original release.

It is believed that Polybius was by Atari in collaboration with the US Government under the code name Sinneslöschen, meaning sense-deletion in German. This makes it somewhat more believable that it was either an internal name for the title or a term that was mixed in as the name of the development studio throughout the years. If it was the name of the company, it would appear in the German corporation registry or the US corporation registry through the Secretary of State, but shows up in neither.

There’s no way for any of this to really be confirmed either, as the only real proof of the cabinet’s existence is a black-and-white photograph and a recreation of the game’s title screen. That is what makes it a great urban legend though, landing it references in popular shows like The Simpsons. It is entirely possible that something like this existed though, with the rise of videogames in the early ‘80s and the Cold War raging on, the military was doing whatever they could with new technologies. If the cabinet did exist, I’m hoping that more information will emerge in the next few years.

Ghost Pokemon

Haunted GHOST Pokémon Black Cartridge

Now, this legend supposedly originated on 4chan, so that should be kept in mind when discussing it. The original post can’t be found, but it was republished on tinycartridge.com back in 2011, so that’s where the credibility of this legend comes from.

As the legend goes, a collector of Pokémon bootlegs was scouring a local flea market and came across a Gameboy cartridge that showed the typical Pokémon cart label, but everything was in black. When booted up, it showed the title ‘Pokémon Black Version”. This was well before the DS version and appears to be based off of the source of Pokémon Red Version.

Things seemed normal from the start, but when the player is presented with the option of choosing a starting Pokémon, there is an extra choice. Along side Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur is GHOST. Nothing seems especially out of the ordinary with GHOST, until he enters his first battle, that is. He starts at level 1, but only has one attack, Curse. (It has been noted that while Curse is a real Pokémon attack, it wasn’t introduced until the 2nd Generation, meaning that it isn’t in typical Red, Yellow, or Blue) The attack doesn’t work as it normally does though.

According to the original poster, when it is used, the screen turns back and the defending Pokémon lets out a warped and disturbing scream. When the battle returns, the enemy is gone and it is heavily implied that they have been killed. This is completely different than how the battles work normally, where the enemies only feint and can be revived later; no one dies.

What if the enemy was faster? They were too scared of GHOST to attack. This meant that it didn’t really matter if the enemy was better, they couldn’t attack and were too scared to run. Every battle was a guaranteed win.

This wasn’t the end of Curse’s effect though. Unlike the standard versions of the game, the battle commands would stay up after a battle was completed. If the player chose RUN, then things ended like they normally would. But if they chose Curse, GHOST would attack the trainer and kill them. When the player left the battle, there was a tombstone where the character had been standing prior. This definitely wasn’t normal.

Players could apparently get through the entire game using this one strategy, only capturing other Pokémon for the purpose of equipping HMs and defeating Ghost-type enemies. The person who found the cart claimed that they played through the game this way, but after they beat the Final Four and was touring the Hall of Fame, something even weirder happened.

The screen cut to black. Instead of ending, a dialogue prompt popped up with ‘many years later...’. The camera follows a much older version of your character, looking at a group of tombstones throughout Lavender Town. As the player is given control, they realize that they have no Pokémon, no items, and no restrictions on where to go. They have no direction though either. Once they make their way back to Pallet Town and to the starting point inside their house, the screen cuts to black again.

Haunted Pokémon

This time is different though. The sound warps and photos of Pokémon begin to flash across the screen. These are the Pokémon and rivals that the player killed using Curse. A message then appears.. “GHOST wants to fight” and enters the player into a battle against GHOST with nothing to attack or defend themselves with. GHOST attacks and kills the player. Once killed, the screen cuts to black. And it stays there. That’s the end.

Only a reset can get anything but the black screen. When booted back up, NEW GAME is the only option available. After GHOST killed the player, it erased the save. It’s not clear whether this mysterious version is real or not, as the original poster claims to have lost it in a move a few years back. Assuming that this version is real, it’s unclear where this Black Version came from. It could be a version that was modded by a fan and distributed in small numbers, but it could also have been put out in a more organized fashion by someone who was in a position to have access to the tool necessary to do this. Either way, I want nothing to do with it.

With the industry as secretive as it is, it wouldn’t surprise me to know of more games like these existing, known only of by player accounts, with no real evidence around to support it. But with the availability of the tools required to mod games, it is certainly harder to follow up on the validity of a situation like this. There are plenty more gaming urban legends out there to find and uncover. What are your favorite legends like these that people may not have heard of?

The Avengers Video Game Coming: Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth On Wii-U And Kinect Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

The Avengers Video Game Coming: Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth

Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth is coming out for the Kinect and Wii-U. Ubisoft and Marvel Entertainment announced that they are teaming up to create a game based on the blockbusting superhero tong. The title will feature more than 20 characters from the Marvel universe and is based on the “Secret Invasion” comics, not the film. We don't know the release date, but it will obviously not be out until after the Nintendo Wii-U launches.

“The idea that we’re making a motion-control version of The Avengers is a unique proposition if you compare that to superhero games of the past,” said Tony Key, Ubisoft’s vice president of sales and marketing said to The Associated Press. “This is the perfect type of game for that because these characters are very action oriented. They’re always fighting and throwing things.”

Further details on the game are scarce, but Ubisoft promises more details at this year's E3 in June. Speaking of which, G4 will be all over E3 2012, bringing you all the news, videos, and surprises you could possibly need or imagine.

PlayStation Vita Sales Hit 1.8 Million Worldwide -- "Software Is The Key To Success" Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

PS Vita

PlayStation Vita sales have hit 1.8 million worldwide, Sony has announced. They've also said that PS Vita software sales, both retail and digital, have passed the two million mark. To compare, the Nintendo 3DS sold 2.1 million copies from January to March 2012, but the Vita's only been out worldwide since the end of February.

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai addressed the sales figure optimistically, saying that for the Vita's starting phase, the handheld console's off to a good start. He did however stress the importance of software for the Vita, saying that it's likely to be the key to Vita's success in the long run, saying, "A game platform, like Vita – the software is the key to success, how good the software is."

"In other words, the collaborative approach is very important, so is third-party. And from first party studios, the titles will be presented one after the other, so please look at them and give your evaluation based on them," Hirai said.

The number may be a bit low, considering Sony had already sold 1.2 million Vitas by the end of February. Have you purchased the handheld since its release? If not, what would Sony have to do to get you to buy one?

Dishonored Release Is Set For October 2012 Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

Dishonored

Bethesda Softworks confirms that Arkane Studios' action/stealth game Dishonored will be coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC platforms -- specifically, Games for Windows -- in North America on October 9, 2012. A European release will follow on October 12.

Dishonored puts players in the shoes of Corvo, a disgraced bodyguard who ends up on the run after he's framed for the murder of the empress he was charged with protecting. Corvo sets out to clear his name in the city in the fictional city of Dunwall, which feels like a steampunk reinterpretation of Victorian London. Early previews peg the game as a blend of Thief: Deadly Shadows and BioShock, but we should get a better sense of it once the media gets its first hands-on at E3 2012.

To get a better sense of the game's multi-path mission focus, be sure to check out our latest Dishonored preview.

Dishonored debuts October 9

October lost a major release yesterday when BioShock Infinite was delayed to next year, but it gained one right back today. Bethesda Softworks this morning announced that it would launch Dishonored in North America on October 9, with an Australian release October 11 and a European debut following October 12.

Set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Dishonored is a first-person action game that puts players in the boots of Corvo, an assassin tasked with protecting the empress of a stylized steampunk city known as Dunwall. However, the empress is soon murdered with Corvo framed for the killing, and sinister forces grant the accused assassin supernatural abilities to pursue his revenge.

Dishonored is being developed by Arkane Studios with co-creative directors Raphael Colantonio and Harvey Smith at the helm. Colantonio was lead designer and director on Arkane's first title, the 2002 role-playing game Arx Fatalis, while Smith made his name as lead designer for Ion Storm's influential first-person action game Deus Ex. Beyond Arx Fatalis, Arkane also handled the original PC version of Ubisoft's Dark Messiah of Might and Magic in 2006. More recently, Arkane assisted 2K Marin with BioShock 2.

Kid Icarus: Uprising Sequel Probably Isn't Happening Soon Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

kid Icarus: uprising

For those of you who saw how well-received Kid Icarus: Uprising was and started hoping for a sequel, it's probably a good idea to dial down those expectations. Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the Nintendo 3DS game, revealed that there are currently no plans for an Uprising follow-up in a recent interview with IGN.

“If by ‘lasting universe’ you mean to ask if there's a sequel, the answer is no," he said in response to a question about the staying power of the world he built with Project Sora. He added that "we pushed a lot into the game in order to let people have this short yet deep experience, but the novelty of that would likely grow thin in the next game. For now, my thought is that perhaps we'll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years.”

He's not entirely wrong. The Nintendo 3DS game is a solid one, but it would have to see some major enhancements to make for a compelling sequel. That shouldn't stop you from playing the March 2012 game though! Just check out our Kid Icarus: Uprising review for proof.

PlayStation Vita sells 1.8 million units

How well is the PlayStation Vita performing? Sony today announced that the new system has sold 1.8 million units in its lifetime. On top of that, the company is projecting to sell another 10 million units during the current fiscal year.

The news came during a post-earnings investor call attended by Gamasutra for Sony's 2011 fiscal year earnings report. During the presentation, newly appointed Sony president Kaz Hirai noted initial PS Vita sales were hitting the mark.

"The last year, 1.8 million units for US, Japan, Asia and Europe [were sold]," he said. And as a starting phase, I think it was a good start."

In February, Sony announced that the PS Vita had sold 1.2 million units worldwide, indicating the system has moved an additional 600,000 systems during March.

Later in the call, Hirai explained that strong, alluring software will spur the PS Vita as a platform.

"For a game platform, like Vita, the software is the key to success--how good the software is, that is the key to business success. We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line."

Sony also today updated sales figures for its game systems. The company said during the 2011 fiscal year, it sold 13.9 million PlayStation 3 consoles, compared to 14.3 million the year prior. Additionally, the PlayStation 2 moved 4.1 million units, a dip from the 6.4 million sold a year ago prior. Lastly, the PSP sold 6.8 million units in fiscal 2011, down from 8.0 million last year.

As for software, Sony said it sold 156.6 million PS3 titles worldwide, a increase for 147.9 million during the previous year. The PS2 moved 7.9 million games, a drop from the 16.4 million from a year prior, and the PSP sold 32.2 million games during the last fiscal year, down from 46.6 million year-on-year. PS Vita software sales were not announced.

As for Sony's actual earnings, for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, revenues for the firm's Consumer Products and Services division (which houses its game business) dipped 18.5 percent year-over-year to ¥3.14 trillion ($39.4 billion). Net losses for the period came in at ¥229.8 billion ($2.88 billion), compared to profits of ¥10.8 billion ($135.5 million) from a year prior.

Sony's overall business was also down. Revenues hit ¥6.5 trillion ($81.6 billion) during the year, marking a decrease of 9.6 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. The company took an operating loss of ¥67.3 billion ($844.5 million) for the year.

Looking ahead, Sony said it anticipates a return to profits in the current fiscal year. The company is presently expecting revenues to surge 14 percent to ¥7.4 trillion ($93 billion), and net income of ¥30 billion ($380 million)

Sons Of Anarchy Creator Reveals Console Game Plans Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

Sons Of Anarchy Creator Meeting With 'Major Game Company' For SoA Game

The previously mentioned possibility of a video game based on FX's biker gang series, Sons of Anarchy, looks to be moving forward for a console release, as confirmed by the show's creator, Kurt Sutter, on Twitter. Sutter writes in a new tweet that he "had a great meeting with a big distributor" and that he along with "everyone at FX and Fox is committed to making this happen."

This whole affair started back in February 2012 when the outspoken Sutter mentioned on Twitter that he was going to be taking meetings for a possible game adapation of the FX series. The plan at the time was for a "high-end browser game" since, as he put it, "to do a quality [console] platform-based game costs tens of millions and takes years." If I had to guess, I'd say that someone set him straight at the aforementioned meetings on the reach of a console game versus a browser game.

It's still very early on in the planning process, but Sutter confirmed his commitment to doing a proper console game in a subsequent tweet. "Yes, we definitely wanna do a REAL game. Console based. Not some slapcrap browser MP thing. It'll take awhile, but it's the right way to go," he wrote.

He had nothing to say about what fans might expect from the Sons game, though yet another tweet nods to another recently released title with ties to a popular cable TV series: The Walking Dead. Sutter wasn't a fan, explaining that he "really wanted to love it... but it felt rushed and a bit unsatisfying" without showrunner Glen Mazzara's "magic touch." Whether or not his words are an indication that the Sons game won't be going in an adventure game direction is anyone's guess, but it's all we have to go on right now.

Regardless, a proper biker gang game of some kind would be pretty nifty, and all the better if it's one that let's you cruise around the streets of Charming in a SAMCRO kutte. Aren't Deep Silver and Eutechnyx working on a open-world biker game, Ride to Hell? Since, like, forever? Wouldn't it be sweet if that project magically transformed into a Sons of Anarchy game?

LEGO Lord Of The Rings Game Outed By Toy Sets, Online Retailer Ads By Google » Blog Tags Today's Most Popular Videos »

LEGO Lord Of The Rings Game Outed Toy Set, Online Retailer

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes isn't even here yet, but we've already got what appears to be confirmation of the next franchise-pegged LEGO title from TT Games: LEGO The Lord of the Rings. The toy company has been sending out early looks at summer 2012's physical LEGO LotR sets, and the packaging includes logos for both Warner Bros. and TT Games, MCV reports.

There's additional evidence as well, in the form of a now-removed product listing -- here's the cached version -- on the UK retailer ShopTo's website for an Xbox 360 release of LEGO The Lord of the Rings (via Eurogamer). The page points to a late October 2012 release. That's hardly confirmation, but a release in that timeframe would make sense, what with Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unpexpected Journey hitting theaters on December 14.

We can't take any of this as fact, of course, but the evidence is nonetheless pretty compelling and hard to ignore. Don't forget: the last time new of a LEGO game leaked early, it was for LEGO Batman 2 and that leak came from early looks at physical playsets. Just saying.
